Anne Hathaway to Get Happy as Judy Garland

Anne Hathaway is a charming presence on screen, but she wouldn’t have been my first choice to play Judy Garland in a biopic about her life. But that is precisely what is happening. The Weinstiens have optioned the Judy Garland story for a feature film and stage production and Hathaway is attached to both.

MovieWeb reports:

Academy Award nominee Anne Hathaway is attached to star as iconic performer Judy Garland in the film and stage adaptations of Gerald Clarke’s biography Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland, for which The Weinstein Company (TWC) has optioned the film and stage rights. The announcement was made today by Harvey Weinstein, co-chairman of TWC.

Get Happy, based on hundreds of interviews plus Garland’s own unfinished and unpublished autobiography, portrays the dramatic highs and lows of the cultural icon’s life- from her tumultuous early years as a child performer to her tragic last days.

I imagine her stage run will be limited, as Hathaway always seems to have some sort of projects on the go, but it is a great idea to support the film and give fans of the stage production the same experience.

Hathaway has a very pretty singing voice, and would be a nice match for Garland’s dulcet tones. But visually I don’t match the two up. We will have to wait and see how this works out.

She is a terrific and classy actress and will nail this. I don’t know anything about Judy Garland other than from Wizard of Oz but Anne seems like the perfect choice. Curious to see how this develops.

wow ……how are u gonna say anne seems like a perfect choice…yet you say you know nothing about judy garland……

      • Devin says:

yeah apparently they do think Anne Hathaway would be a perfect choice. Whether they know anything about Judy Garland or not. Not a very nice comment just so you know. I like Saracasm too….but still not a very nice comment.

I love anne but I think amy adams would be a better choice.

  3. Yamo says:

im sorry i couldnt stop looking at that pic

  4. bigsampson says:

i like her acting skills but i really dont care for her…..she can pull off the judy garland look easily though so thats a plus

  5. Dragonslayer says:

Wow, she looks fantastic in that picture. I think she is a good choice.

  6. Meli says:

I thought the casting a bit of an odd choice myself. Anne can pull off the classic look, but she seems a little mismatched for Garland though I’m sure she’ll do a wonderful job. Of course Garland wasn’t the most emotionally stable person I’m curious if they will show the darker side of the actress.

  7. stepperry says:

Anne Hathaway maybe a good actress and even a good enough singer to Judy Garland but Hathaway is 5 feet 8 inches tall and Judy was about 4 feet 10 inches tall.

    • Rodney says:

Garland is a personality, and she is not known at all for her physical presence. I already mentioned that the two don’t even look the same, but I have no doubt she can act the part.

Height doesn’t matter at all. Robert Downey Jr is 6 inches taller than Chaplin was and he played the role brilliantly.

  8. leeloo says:

    can she sing?

    • k... says:

I dont understand why people post nonsense before doing a little research… Its very easy to find out; just go to youtube and type ‘Anne Hathaway singing’ and there you go.

    • Rodney says:

I don’t know why some people have to express their false superiority by telling someone how to answer their own question just to sound all smart.

Good for you K. You win many internetz. I bet you make some good lolcats too.

  9. Julian says:

I think that it really depends how they tackle it. Anne Hathaway has enough physical similarities (except height) to enable them to do the rest with clever makeup. I think she also has the acting capability to pull it off. Judy Garland however had a once in a lifetime voice which made her a show business legend. If Hathaway is only average, or even just good in this area, the film will lose all credibility. Better I think to use Judy’s voice as they did with the Judy Davis TV version. Tammy Blanchard as the young Judy in the earlier version was excellent (and a dead-ringer for Garland). Now that she has matured, she could well have played the older Garland too.

  10. ROSE says:

I’M A HUGE JUDY GARLAND FAN AND COLLECTOR AND I’M ABSOLUTELY THRILLED ABOUT THIS NEW VENTURE.
JUDY DIED WAY TOO SOON AND I MISS HER DEEPLY, THERE WAS SO MUCH MORE FOR HER TO DO!
I BELIEVE THAT ANNE WILL BE ABLE TO BRING JUDY BACK TO LIFE AND WE SHOULD BE GREATFUL THAT WE WILL BE GIVEN SOME INSIGHT INTO THIS WONDERFULLY TALENTED YET TORMENTED WOMAN.
THERE IS ONLY ON JUDY AND TO EXPECT TO FIND HER DOUBLE IS REDICULOUS, A STAR ONLY NEEDS THE TALENT TO CHANNEL A PERSONALITY WITH FINESS AND HONESTY NOT HAVE TO HAVE THERE LEGS SHORTENED AND PLASTIC SURGERY!
THE PROOF WILL BE IN THE FINAL CUT!

YOU GO ANNE DO US PROUD!

  11. Mark says:

Ann is a great star….I hope she can sing like Miss
    Garland

  12. Joe Schmoe says:

Poor Anne. This movie has stinker written all over it.
