First Look at Rachel McAdams in Sherlock Holmes

By Rodney - February 3, 2009 - 08:20 America/Montreal

In the category of “Damn she’s Pretty” we get our first look at Rachel McAdams in her role as Irene Adler, ripped out of the pages of a Sherlock Holmes novel and up on the big screen for the rest of us to enjoy.

The Bad and the Ugly says:

It took Guy Richie’s Sherlock Holmes movie coming to New York to finally get a look at Rachel McAdams as Irene Adler, a character who appeared in Arthur Conan Doyle’s 1891 A Scandal in Bohemia, though never again in the Sherlock mythos.

I am still on the fence about this movie but I am about what I am hearing.

The cast seems great. Jude Law as Watson rounding out Robert Downey Jr as Holmes across from Rachel McAdams. You would think you couldn’t lose with those guys. But then I thought George Clooney as Batman and Schwarzenegger as Freeze was a match too. And that was an epic fail.

I think my biggest concerns are how this “fresh new look” at the legendary figure has so much potential to rock, but also to fail. I am no purist, but there is no Professor Moriarty, and Holmes is being depicted as somewhat of a martial artist (traditionally he was a pugilist - not too big a stretch) and from the tidbits we see there will be a fair bit of action. Guy Ritchie is no slack and loves to offer up stuff just left of weird so I am not sold yet.

But as for the wonderful visage of fellow Canadian Rachel McAdams, you can see more images of her in various stages of walking down a flight of stairs here.

“… but there is no Professor Moriarty…”

To be fair, Moriarty only appears in a handful of Doyle’s stories. His reputation as Holmes’ arch enemy isn’t really justified.

(In fact, he was created as something of a deux ex machina to kill off Holmes).

McAdams has had bad management in my opinion. She should be a household name by now but is not. Tremendously appealing but has not capatalized enough off her role in the Notebook.

Damn she’s pretty indeed. I’m not too familiar witht he actual writings of Sir Arthur, but I get the feeling that this update of the literary classic comes along with some steampunk influences, which could either be really cool, or fail miserably (a’la League of Extrordinary Gentlemen.).

I think the casting seems pretty good… I’m particularly excited about seeing Jr up on the screen again.

  4. Tripp Van Easille says:

Another one who’s had some bad management lately is Kate Beckinsale, two films with minimal or no distribution (Snow Angels & Nothing but the Truth). True the distribution com. for the latter went bankrupt, but its a little frustrating to fans. I’ll have to Google McAdams to see what shees starred in….

  5. Katie says:

Haha, I always think of her as Regina George from Mean Girls.

you’re taste in movies is very biased towards action movies…..how could anybody make a comment like “i thought clooney and schwarzenegger were a match” is beyond me…..and in the past few months i’ve seen you get hyped for action movies that look absolutely horrible

    • Rodney says:

And everyone has different tastes. Clooney is a great actor and for something like Batman I thought Arnie would be great.

The script and the flawed vision of the director made that movie a steaming pile.

Your opinion is that action movies look horrible. I like a popcorn film and I like other films too.

I don’t see how that is “beyond you”.

  8. Raúl says:

I once saw the adventures of Sherlock Holmes with Christopher Lee. It suked balls big time

  9. gaz says:

excited about this too - those photos though… she’s been photoshopped in BIGtime.

  10. Tim says:

Don’t worry, this movie isn’t directed by Joel Schumacher.
