Harrison Ford to return as Jack Ryan?

John wrote an article earlier today that talked about aging characters bringing their iconic roles back in sequels as older versions of themselves. Well he wasn’t the only one thinking it. Synapses are firing in the braintrust behind the Jack Ryan series of films to bring Harrison Ford back in series’ titular role.

MovieHole says:

Ford tells The Sun newspaper that Jack Ryan is a character that’s actually been allowed to age in the books, so it makes sense that his 65-year-old ass would still fit into the agent’s trousers.”That’s a character that I think you could revisit acknowledging the passage of time and his increasing age. It wasn’t age dependent; that character and his experiences were chockablock full of recipes for good engaging movies, so that’s a character I wouldn’t mind revisiting.”

Though the next film won’t be based – Paramount probably realized he wouldn’t be happy with whatever they did anyway – on any of Tom Clancy’s novels, the Ryan character ultimately became President of the United States in some of the later novels.

And this isn’t just Ford talkin here, Mace Neufeld, producer of the Ryan stories is eager to make this happen.

Interestingly enough if they do follow a parallel to the books, Jack Ryan does age, and eventually becomes president (stepping up from Vice President after a 747 lands in the White House killing the Commander and Chief) so an older Jack Ryan would be appropriate. This wouldn’t be the first time Harrison Ford played the President of the United States either.

Would it still have the following without being based on one of the books? Would that increase the following?

With Ford proving he can play an aged version of one of his own characters, it makes sense for them to jump back on the Harrison Express and get as much out of them while they still can.

it’s kinda sad to see harrison ford “going back” to these movies that made him famous, just cause “they can”

indiana jones 4 reminded me of terminator 3 or die hard 4. these movies that do it cause they can, and i leave the theater sayin” that was a unnecessary movie”

at least if he ages we can see 2 universes merge and have air force one 2, being he’s the president and all

Pedantry alert: it’s “Commander-in-chief” not “Commander and Chief.”

I really like Indy 4 it was kind of a continuation (Unlike the other two with diffrent storys/love intrests) of “Raiders” for me. It’s the film they should have made in the first place. I would love to see Ford reprise this role, and I don’t think they are just making them because they can. The story of a plane in the White House sounds like a good plot as well, might have to read the book.

Ben, I am Canadian, so I am allowed to make mistakes on the president’s nicknames and titles lol

Never Mind Jack Ryan do a Mr Clark movie.(Defoe character in CandPD), however he needs to be more badass. Maybe Howie Long or ???

Is it me or is the “Gen X” surfeit of action stars? The Rock and Vin Diesel both suck. I guess Kevin Durand ain’t too bad, and Jason Statham but he’s a Brit…

why don’t they want to do a movie based on the clancy books? If they”re not basing the movie on a clancy book, what’s the point? Executive Orders was the first clancy book I read, and I think this would be a perfect plot to base the new movie on. Jack Ryan as P.O.T.U.S.,then some bad ass character to play Clark. This would be a good movie to tie in to the John Clark movie as well (supposedly starring joaquin phoenix…

the jack ryan character definitely evolves into someone that harrison ford could portray perfectly. however, an entirely different actor is needed for the action pieces (zavala)
