Donnie Darko Sequel In The Works?
It appears that the cult hit Donnie Darko will be plagued with an unwanted sequel. We get the following scoop thanks to the WEBMASTER over at Film Junk:
It may sound like a cruel joke, but according to Screen Daily, it’s the truth. There’s a Donnie Darko sequel in the works, and a U.K. company called Velvet Octopus will reportedly be shopping around the rights at Cannes. The movie is apparently called S. Darko, and will focus on Donnie’s younger sister Samantha seven years later. Daviegh Chase has already signed on to reprise her role, and will be joined by Ed Westwick, Briana Evigan and Justin Chatwin. None of the other original cast members are expected to make an appearance.
….this has Blair Witch 2 written all over it. With luck this film will go direct to DVD and be used to prop up desks with a bum leg.

This project is the definition of “unwanted sequel”. I like the movie, but why the hell is a sequel necessary? I respect that the director really likes Donnie Darko, but the fact that Richard Kelly has no involvement shows warning signs for “shit” happening.
It is sad that Donnie Darko now has to be another victum of these ‘cash-in-on-the-name’ bargin-bin sequels.

The director’s cut was bad enough (hey, let’s put in answers to all the questions that made the original interesting and spoon feed the stupid people so they can understand it).
Also, why the S? Shouldn’t the sequel to Donnie Darko be Samantha Darko?
This makes no sense on any level. I hope all the people that made the original a “cult hit” (read: general moviegoer too dumb to see the genius in it) avoid this just on principal.
