Remake Of Friday the 13th Will Be Restricted

Not too long ago we heard wind that the new Friday the 13th would be PG 13. It appears that was a rumor and the film will have an R rating. We get the good news from the gentleman at Bloody-Disgusting:

“None of our remakes have been PG-13,” Producer Brad Fuller tells Bloody-Disgusting. “How do you remake a rated R horror movie and take the guts out literally and figuratively? What is F13 without sex, drugs and really, really long sharp machete? And why would we, horror fans ourselves, produce a movie devoid of the things that made the title so appealing in the first place. So let me say for the record, that the F13 that we start shooting this Thursday is a full bodied, rated R film.”

He elaborates on just how R-rated this film will be. “It has insane kills that will be shown in all their glory- it has a group of college students who drink and even have sex. We are betting that if we don’t hold back that the audience will reward us for being bold in a time when some horror movies are playing the ratings game. So we embrace the R-rating Friday the 13th will have, and hope you (the B-D readers) will too.”

Well this is certainly cause for celebration. I am still not enthused about a remake of the classic film, but at least it will be true to form in R land. I recently saw the PG-13 Prom Night remake and it was brutal (not the good kind of brutal). No blood, horrible kill scenes and just a giant waste of fucking time. Horror films need to be R like Pornography needs to be XXX , some genres demand happenings that only adults should see (and sneaky, resourceful teens).

Jason is among my favorite on screen villains and I certainly don’t want to see him butchered by those that will not butcher. Pensive as I am about the remake, I will be the first to cheer when he kills again on the big screen. Just to kick the nostalgia up a notch, I may even try to catch this at the drive in - that would be a blast.

Yea im still not sure about a F13 remake but its good to know that these guys know what ppl want. Just thinking of a PG-13 Jason or Freddy movie really brings my piss to a boil. However, just because a horror movie is rated R doesnt mean it will be good. After all? Jason X was rated R and that movie sucked.

If it is a remake of the original, Jason won’t be the killer, if you remember, his mother was the killer in the 1st movie. Unless they are doing more than a re-make.

True, an R rating won’t automatically make a movie good; however, it will at least be true to the source material.

Slasher movies have never been my cup of tea, but I have to acknowledge that making a PG-13 slasher flick that contains no nudity, gore, or harsh language is simply an effort of the studio’s part to make as much money as possible by hitting the widest demographic. I can understand that thinking, but a remake should stay true to the source material. So bravo to this news — Friday the 13th fans should at least get a movie that at least resembles the flick they remember.

That reminds me, what’s happening with that supposed remake of ‘Battle Royale’?

“. Horror films need to be R..”

No, not all the time-there are exceptions. Poltergiest was PG. Platinum Dunes’ threat of remaking Hitchcock’s The Birds- was that an R? Then there was this flick from the 80’s called “The Gate”. That wasn’t an R.

Yes those (and even Jaws) are exceptions. But what is more disturbing is that great recent horror films with a R rating hardly make a dent with the masses. Nobody went to see last year’s “Mist” (and they lost out big time) nobody went to see the nice effort of “The Ruins”. But lo and behold, the PG-13 Prom Night is #1. Oddly, in a cross promotion, the underrated Prom Night II: Hello Mary Lou started showing up on DVD in the past few weeks. Now that’s “good” R horror and was better than the Jamie Lee Curtis film.

All I know is, those who are reduxing My Bloody Valentine and Terror Train better show some frackin’ blood!

Good points, Darren. I have to agree with you on The Mist as well — thought that was a fantastic adaptation.

It is a grave injustice that ‘Prom Night’ is number 1 — alas, that will most likely only reinforce the notion that these types of films need to be PG13. I agree that horror movies don’t necessarily need to be R-rated — honestly if the story elements and the narrative don’t include content that warrants an R (Poltergeist is a great example of this), then that’s great.

The frustrating aspect is when they take concepts (or worse, remake R-rated movies) and water them down to make the PG-13 rating. That’s when the story, pacing, and elements that define the horror genre usually suffer and the film becomes mediorce.

It goes beyond the horror genre as well. Just look at the first AvP (although, granted, the R-rated sequel wasn’t much better, at least it was tonally equivalent to the franchises it was based on)…
