Iron Man gets Earlier Release Date

By Rodney - April 24, 2008 - 08:21 America/Montreal

Iron Man is going to up his release date… by about 4 hours. So if you want to get the jump on the other drooling fanboys, here is your chance.

/Film says:

Paramount is planning to open its highly anticipated Iron Man at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 1, instead of one minute past midnight as originally announced. The studio is apparently hoping that word-of-mouth will help boost box-office business for the weekend

It is interesting that this tactic would really only allow for one (maybe two with staggered start times) extra viewing before the weekend yet they are playing the gamble that the dedicated rabid fans who line up for this early showing will talk it up hard on Friday to boost attendance for the weekend.

Midnight showings were always a solid tactic (and will still continue with Iron Man) as a way of getting just a couple extra viewings available for the opening weekend. But is it even necessary to try and drive MORE people to see Iron Man that weekend? Technically those ‘just before’ tallies wont count towards the weekend total. Will it make up for it?

I have yet to hear anything bad at all about this movie, and it lands in a 3 way tie of anticipation for Indiana Jones and Batman Dark Knight for me.

You would think the positive buzz will be JUST as reinforced on Friday from the legions of midnight attenders as it would have from the just before midnight attenders.

I am not willing to watch a midnight showing since I have to get up for work at 5am. So I love the idea of an 8pm showing.

I can’t wait for this one, whenever it comes out, even if I have to stay up all night I am going to see this one when it opens. I have always been a comicbook fan and love the movies they are coming out with. :P

I think it will actually hurt the weekend totals.

Those who would have gone at midnight will now go at 8. I mean, who wants to watch a movie at midnight when they can watch it at 8:00? I don’t see how showing it 4 hrs early will make up for the loss of packed theaters for 2 showings that count toward the real weekend total.

They will be getting out of the theaters around 10:30 to midnight and it will be so late in the evening that they can’t really talk it up any more than they could have had they gone at midnight.

The kiddo and I are starting to countdown the days. With these ealier showings I know I’m going to be looking for word of mouth before I head off to bed.

  8. Carlos says:

In Mexico city the release will be April 30 10am

  9. Coquito Von Tito says:

It’s soooo near. I even started an Iron Man week in anticipation. *shivers uncontrollably*

  10. Kristina says:

I’m going to a free screening Tuesday at 7:30, but one of my good friends can’t come since he has an exam at that time, so I’m going with him to a midnight show opening night.

  11. Kristina says:

And honestly, this summer I’m going to try and hit a lot of midnight screenings. People are much more likely to get a call on their cell phones at 8pm than at 12am, so that noise is reduced. People aren’t going to bring babies and little kids to 12am screenings, so that’s out of the way, too. On top of that, hardcore fans turn out for midnight screenings, and they will NOT tolerate some fuck talking through their movie. They’ll police each other much harder than at a regular screening. Midnight is where it’s at:)

Indiana Jones = midnight screening for me. Also, May 9th the tickets go on sale. I’m there.

Iron Man = DVD release for me. That IS pretty cool what they’re doing for Iron Man, though not near as cool as Transformers coming out the 3rd instead of the 4th.

  13. Edvin says:

Im seeing this movie the 30th april here in lil old Denmark
