Hugh Jackman talks XMen Origins: Wolverine

By Rodney - April 25, 2008 - 06:50 America/Montreal

Hugh Jackman recently sat down to talk about XMen Origins: Wolverine, and from what I have read, this movie is really shaping up to be very cool.

Superhero Hype offers:

Jackman is deep into shooting an X-Men spinoff and new Seed project Wolverine in Sydney with co-stars Liev Schreiber and Ryan Reynolds.

“I’m used to these movies now,” he says. “They’re big and there’s a lot involved, a lot at stake, so it’s always high pressure. But Gavin Hood, our director, is a real force. He’s an Oscar-winning director (for Tsotsi) and he’s used to working under different kinds of pressure and stresses.”

Jackman hand-picked Melbourne youngster Kodi Smit-McPhee (Romulus, My Father) to play Wolverine as a young man.

This spells out a lot of good things to me about this spinoff. The XMen movies did sometimes focus a little too much on Wolverine. However as much as they focused on Logan, they still didnt get into the heart of the stories that made him such an interesting character so I think it is a good idea to give him his own movie.

This will serve to show us a lot more detail into Wolverine’s past as well as getting to see him throw down with great iconic nemesis like Sabretooth and Deadpool. Both fan favourites.

Furthermore Jackman gives his endorsement to the young actor who will play Wolverine as a child. So we will get plenty of flashback stuff too. I hope this really helps to flesh out his story.

This will be the climax to the geekgasm that the comicbook fanboys have been getting foreplay with in the XFilms.

I hope that they show Wolverine’s more feral, beserker side in the Origins Film. And since he used to be an assasin and not so nice guy, I wonder how people will react to him later on if they show this side of him. I know he has always been a huge highlight in the xfilms but what can I say he is a fan favorite in the movies, comics and animated series.

i want to see non-stop action from deadpool and i also need to see beak die in the first 3 minutes of the movie

  3. JAMIE says:

oh- and please…this time..dont make wolverene cry over a chick, she wasnt even that pretty…just show him kicking ass and leave it at that…..no need to make it like a soap opera, its just a superhero movie- no drama nessesary thats not why we want to see it, if it was wed go and home and watch the spiderman 3 dvd

  4. Jay says:

    @Jamie…”…dont make wolverene cry over a chick…”

Exactly. I want a hard-ass claw ripper from Wolverine.

So far sounds good. This movie will no doubt top X3.

  5. Geno says:

You have to have some bit of drama, I think it fleshes out the characters makes them seem more real than fictional. I know Femke Jensen is one of the hottest females but she still looks good. And hey if I had to kill the girl I loved to save San Francisco. I would be pretty teared up myself and cry like a little girl.

  6. Meli says:

One of the most interesting aspects of Wolverine is that beneath all the hardness is a man with deep emotions. He’s a protector and passionate as the comics have shown through the years. That doesn’t mean I want a romance drama fest in this movie - I don’t. I want to see an action flick, but if they show only one side then the character is going to come off as one-dimensional.

    On the $$$$$$$$$$, buddy.

  8. Meli says:

    :) thanks, Kristina.

    Welcome!

That’s the tricky balance that they managed to pull off very well for the first two X-Men movies. He was a badass, but he clearly is a big brother to Rogue and a wannabe suitor to Jean. If he was just running around killing people, I wouldn’t have liked him as much as I did. Now, I dislike having token romance in action movies. I downright DESPISE it, but they managed to make it work in X-Men because Wolverine wasn’t sitting around the mansion scattering rose petals on Jean’s bed. They went overboard in X3, but other than that, I’m all for Wolvie having a soft spot.

    @ Meli
true i agree dude- but still X3 was about completely 100% about wolverene looking for jene grey- like the whole movie was about her who- by the way- happens to be one of the most boring characters. but they DID kill cyclops 3 minutes into the movie, decide to not show nightcrawler, colosus did shit, and iceman- well- you know.

  11. Meli says:

@Jamie13 - hey, by no means will I defend the nightmare that X3 was, my god, I can’t even bring my self to watch it all the way through again because I get angry with how they buchered the story of the Phoenix. No, I wasn’t expecting the comic, but shit, the cartoon in the 90s did a better job retelling that story!
I agree they fucked up Wolverine’s character a bit with how he single mindedly only wanted to find and help Jean. Then again, my friend and I use to joke all the time about how in the comics (this was in the 90s) Cyclops and Wolverine both always seemed be yelling “Jean!” cause of some odd reason those two couldn’t get it through their heads she could take care of herself.
In any case, I want to see a well rounded Wolverine in his movie and I hope they don’t muttle it up with a love story for the sake of having him carrying on with some chic. Love stories do not attract females for these types of films. The only girls who will go are either barginning with their dates or are into the comic/action flick genre.

  12. JAMIE says:

    @ meli
yeah! shes like the most dangerous x-man! idk y theyre so far up her ass…
thing is all the people theyve casted so far are dudes- krystina mentioned wolverene having that connection with rogue and jean grey but there not going to be in this movie (i dont think) so they might not show that…so far theyve just been showing vilains- which IS a good thing cuz that means that there will be fighting but we all agree that we dont want him being too much of one thing or the other. well see after they show the trailer.

(idk y my last message was jamie13..hmmm)

  13. Geno says:

    @Jamie

They like Jean because power is sexy. Don’ t you think power is sexy? Ok jokes aside I don’t think there will be much romance in this film. I wonder how its going to be played off? Will they tie in some parts from the actual Wolerine: Origins comic? Maybe as bits of flashbacks but who knows, I just want them to show Wolverine for his true bad ass killing machine that he is. And hopefully Ryan Reynolds will do a good job as Deadpool, he has the wit and smirk for it.

  14. HisDivineShadow says:

I doubt Hugh Jackman would agree to a balls out Wolverine ass kick fest.
There has to be some emotion with the character. That’s what made the first 2 X-men films winners.

X3 had a horrible ending and the Phoenix arc was absolutly awefull. Cyclops was wasted. They could have done a cool origin film of him. Wtf.

I’m really NOT looking forward to a Magneto film. I hear that’s the next X-men spinoff

  15. Rodney says:

@Geno “I don’t think there will be much romance in this film”

Keep in mind they have already cast a sexy actress (Maggie Q) to play Silver Fox. Logan’s ex wife in the comics and later an agent of Hydra.

There will be some romance. But since Maggie has already proven she can kick some ass too, it shouldn’t be too bad.

  16. JAMIE says:

    RODNEY
actually- i dont think there will be much romance in this film either. and itll have to do with them not wanting to do things like in X3, they are abviously going for an all out action movie hence the casting, silver fox is like the only chick that i know of thats been casted for this movie- the rest are all guys so- obviously there wont be much romance unless wolverene is homo

    HisDivineShadow
i dont think he really cares- if he did he would have told them to not make him look like a bitch in the last film. but yes there must be emotion like in X1 and 2, but there is always that line..specially in a character as bad ass as wolverene

i ask only for one thing: DONT SHOW DEADPOOLS FACE! HIS MASK IS EVERYTHING HE STANDS FOR!

  17. Rodney says:

They can show Deadpools face. He used an image inducer to make himself look smarmy swag. It was funny. Furthermore, if they do show it at all then I hope that its all scarred and deformed like he really is.

  18. JAMIE says:

    RODNEY
wait- whats “swarmy swag”? does that mean hell be deformed?

they always end up showing it that way people know what he really is but they have to make him touchy about it.

this is why i sayd rey reynolds was a bad choice- hes a good actor and they wont even show his face so no one will be able to tell anywho. they could have just gotten a guy with a canadien (or brittish i cant tell) accent
and it would have made no difference. theyr paying a way-too-good actor for no reason.

  19. Rodney says:

Jamie, if you read it I said he used an image inducer to make himself look smarmy swag. Kinda like a cartoon lounge lizard. He also frequently used it to look like Tom Cruise (they spelled his name wrong in the comics to avoid getting sued over it but it was obvious)

His REAL face is all scarred and deformed.

Also, if you can`t tell the difference between a Canadian or a British accent you need to get out of the house more.

Reynolds was hired for his WIT. This is a cornerstone of Deadpool`s personality. I think it is a perfect fit.

  20. JAMIE says:

    RODNEY
lol nononno the thing is to me it sounds brittish but then everyone says it sounds canadien so i just stayed neutral. in marvel allience he sounds british

no yeah i know that whole part i was wondering if theyll show his masked face or his fucked up real face. cuz if they show his fucked up real face then its a waste

  21. Cykes says:

The Fox people were complete idiots. They could have had Wolverine be all bad ass, and still kept the other X-Men fans happy, but Noooooooo…they shove Wolverine down everyone’s throat and shove the others a side…..like he’s the sole reason the X-Men franchise is a hit. What a pile of Over Glorified Wolverine S***.

Any of the characters (especially Cyclops!) Could have been the central highlight of the movie and it would have kicked monumental Bad Ass (not that I would wish one character to completely HOG a whole movie…just that it be fair to the integrity of all the characters)….but the fact that Fox has no creativity is what has lead me to having to hear such idiotic comments as “Cylcops is the most boring Character….Wolverine is the Bad Ass of the X-Men”….which quite frankly is ONLY true of the X-Men movies because of the way Cykes & HOG-ERINE…errr Wolverine was portrayed…but NOT TRUE IF THE CHARACTERS HAD BEEN IN THE HANDS OF WRITTERS WHO HAVE A BRAIN AND ARE TALENTED AT WRITTING ACTION SCRIPTS ALONG WITH GREAT DRAMA!

But of course, I shouldn’t waste too much time on this, what with the way Cykes was done in the movies. It’s almost like, NO, IT is like the Fox Studios just said “Hey Cyclops, why don’t you just bend over so Wolvie here can F*** you over”. Well? Was it good for you Wolvie? Did you go all Bersker on him? And more importantly are all your fans happy?

Personally, I thought Hugh Jackman was Super Cool as Wolverine in the first 2 movies….but now I’d like to shove those Wolverine Claws up his behind.

  22. Blue Blaze says:

hey wait! you guys are so not genuin lobo fans…….
i mean sure lobo had a wild feral untaimed dog side, but he was also very smart, he looked at things and made sence of them when ol scotch jus pushed him aside and put everyone ahead of him. he was also a very loyal friend, and he had feelings, he wasnt just a hard_ killer……. and as for hugh…I love the dude, looks caring and fun,no so roughf an toughf but hey hes goodlookin for a aussi.

    • Rodney says:

Lobo might be your favourite, but we will never see him on the big screen for one reason only.

      Appeal.

There is none. He doesn’t sell books, and the few people who care about him like him for the same reason as any other “strong guy” superhero out there that is 10 times more popular and recognizable.

  23. Blue Blaze says:

news flash rod! we already saw him on the big screen! lobo is my nickname for logan aka wolverine…
an ya know for all you who say your lobo fans, you sure put him down alot….

    • Rodney says:

So you give Wolverine a nick name that is NOT his name, but is the name of another lesser known hero in comics, and everyone reading your posts is supposed to know that?

  24. Blue Blaze says:

ok 1 what other comic hero is called lobo?
an 2 ofcorse id think youd konw, i mean who else are we talking about?

    • Rodney says:

Well you were talking about Lobo, and the other comic book hero called Lobo.

That would be Lobo. DC Comics interstellar traveling bounty hunter and mercenary.

I don’t see why you are confused. Wolverine has never and never will be called Lobo. Even if you want to give him your own romantic pet name.

  25. Blue Blaze says:

again 1 i never mentioned the other lobo, i never even knew there was charicter like that
2 i use lobo cause im hespanic and i think it fits him better
3 what’s romantic supose to mean? you think im that sick?
4 ps i have writtin fanfics with him an a girl i made up but only cause i was bord!
    5 so burn off!

    • Rodney says:

      1. We don’t know you are ignorant to the “other Lobo”, you are assuming.
      2. Your ethnic background and choice to rename someone something he has never been called is ignorant.
      3. You made up a pet name for him.. typically a romantic quality. Got it cupcake?
      4. Fanfic is hack writing. Changing a gender of a character for the sake of fanfic is borderline slash.
      5. You cannot justify your random ignorance, so find new ways to call him that people might have a clue what you are talking about.

How about I just call you Jane from now on. That way EVERYONE will know who I mean.

      Get it?

  26. Blue Blaze says:

not to mention it shorter to write lobo then it is wolverine an wolvie jus sounds dumb and not everyone knows him as logan

    • Rodney says:

So, “not everyone knows him as Logan” is justifiable to you, but calling him a name NO ONE ever knew him as or referred to him as is acceptable?

      You are digging a hole.

You have a little pet name for him no one else knows about, so don’t assume anyone will know what you mean.

  27. Blue Blaze says:

ok pal that did it! yeh mabey i shoulda jus said wolver or somthing but that dont mean lobo’s a pet name, i mean think about it, any girl who thinks theyd get a shot wit logan is nuts, he kill em first. idk why were fighting anyway, did i insult you or something?

    • Rodney says:

Its a pet name. Its a name that ONLY you call him, that he has never been called EVER. And “any girl who thinks theyd get a shot with Logan” would have to be on some sort of drugs. Wolverine is a fictional character. Furthermore you clearly know nothing about Wolverine or you might have noticed he has a LOT of storylines that deal with his romances. So in the books clearly lots of girls have a shot at him.

You didn’t insult me, but carrying on with this routine of yours is insulting yourself.

  28. Blue Blaze says:

ok so why are we arguing? and u bet i know him, i read whatever i can, i know bout mariko, an im not stupid i know hes made up….
but anyway i geusse u have a piont…so why dont we change the subject? sides i think we detered everyone else..
