Sacha Baron Cohen spotted filming Bruno
The new Cohen film Bruno is already rumoured to be under way. A sighting earlier this month was reported by FirstShowing:
Over the last year, reported sightings of Cohen and his suspicious film crew have cropped up many times. Earlier this month, “a film crew claiming to be making a film about culture in America” infiltrated a church and airport in Wichita, Kansas. Sounds like Bruno.
I first have to admit that I found Borat to be so intelligent and utterly hilarious. I say this so that you don’t think I am a Sacha Baron Cohen hater. But for every reason I loved Borat, I fear I will hate Bruno.
The actual title for Bruno is reportedly going to be Bruno: Delicious Journeys Through America for the Purpose of Making Heterosexual Males Visibly Uncomfortable in the Presence of a Gay Foreigner in a Mesh T-Shirt.
Furthermore, the concept of the film is that this culturally displaced character will be a Television Reporter filming a documentary about US Culture?
This sounds like it is the same movie… Wait. It IS the same movie. Is his career already over if he has to resort to just churning out a remake of his own movie? Despite his diverse character roster, I just can’t see this working the second time.
Its the same movie. You did this already.

I would have to disagree to a certain degree on this. The Ali G show itself was built upon these three characters that Cohen had introduced. Each segment while similar in execution were all handled and portrayed quite differently. I personally never once thought while watching the show that the segments were ever copying one another. He took 3 unique persona’s and put them into similar circumstances but with wildly different results. If you didn’t have an issue with the television show I don’t see how you’d have an issue with another beloved character. Bring on Bruno i say…niche niche.

There is a big difference between his skit show pulling the same gag for segments and a feature film that is an exact copy of the first movie based on his character.
Let me guess… Ali G gets to play a reporter doing a documentary on US culture next??

First of all there already has been an Ali G movie. Much less well-known than Borat and much less good. But not the same format.
Given that the format of Da Ali G show was the same as this, and given that that is the source for both Borat and Bruno, I don’t see why this is a surprise.

I think Cohen has taken it upon himself to highlight the inherent discrimination in american culture, towards different groups of people. He hit foreigners, southerners, frat-boys, feminists, and who knows who else for the Borat movie, and now it seems like he’s going to highlight attitudes towards the gay. I’m not sure I understand why he thinks this is his birthright, but I guess everyone is free to criticize what they want.

Its not the same movie. Yes the basic premise is the same - displaced character used to highlight the prejudices of American society - that doesn’t mean the film will be a simple copy of the first in any reasonable sense of the term. Bruno is enjoyably distinct from Borat as a character and also will be drawing on a different prejudice pool of course. If this is your criteria for sameness then bust out the criticism for Indy - charming archeologist goes adventuring for lost treasure and and fighting bad guys - or pretty much any film that ever had a sequel or borrowed from a good idea (keeping on theme, think The Mummy). Of course not all sequels and films that draw on a familiar formula are mere copies and many are enjoyable. Good sequels draw on the formula that made the original film successful in the first place but also bring something new table, and the differences in characters and details of the social stunts may provide just that for Cohen.
Sure Cohen is going back to the well here, there is no doubt, but that doesn’t mean its a bad idea. Its a pretty a obvious one given the success he has had thus far. Whether we see more from him once this original character pool is depleted I don’t know, but we’re not really in a position to judge this as of yet.

I think he has to do them in the US because he’s not as known there as in Europe. He can get away with it.
The Bruno skits usually involved apparent ant gay people, skinheads, neo nazis and such. Very funny stuff.

It was always fairly obvious that Cohen would do Bruno as the final part of bringing his characters to film so I don’t really know what your objection is. He’s proved that he can be very, very funny and I have no doubt that Bruno will provide more laughs and lots of new situations. And as for his career being over? Come on - seriously?!

Bruno is Cohen’s worst charactor and when compared to ali g or borat has had very little screen time on TV.
Personally I find Bruno very irritating and very very predictable, I doubt the movie will do aswell as borat did, I certainly wont be seeing it at the flicks.
I can say it wont be a copy of borat though, as even though it may seem like a similar premise, it has a very very different feel when actually watched.
Heres hoping he scraps the project. After all the crap that happened with borat, what kind of people are going to be signing disclaimers. which will probably result in a tame movie with lots of fake parts.
Give it up Cohen, get yourself some original roles like talledega nights.
