Guillermo del Toro Not offical on the Hobbit. Yet?
A little over a month ago Guillermo del Toro was directing the Hobbit and though there is no news of that changing I was surprised today to find out it still isn’t set in stone.
Comingsoon.net writes:
“At this stage anything I say is of no consequence for I am not yet signed to do ‘The Hobbit.’ Negotiations advance but are still ongoing,” he said.He added, “All I can say is that I am diligently going through all Tolkien material related to Middle-earth but only as a way of bridging a gap in my reading. I still respond the strongest to ‘The Hobbit,’ but as an avid reader of Mythology I find a lot of his other writings fascinating. A perfect Cosmology forged from very eclectic sources.”
Maybe these things usually take this long, but really its been a while since the intentions were made, and the boy is doing his homework like its already a done deal.
But really. Papers are not done? He resists commenting publicly because of the lack of official deals. Granted he did cover those tracks with a “but negotiations are going well” tag perhaps in case someone perceived his statement as positioning.
What do you think? No big deal? Everything fine?
Or is this taking too long to sign papers?

I said it once, twice and I’ll repeat it again.
Negotiations are just that and nothing more. But “everyone” says opposite. Del Toro was (and still is) the front runner. But he’s not signed to do anything yet. I get weary when geekdom has the ink dry before the talent dots the i’s and crosses the t’s. They set themselves up for shocking revelations like this one.
However, I *do* wonder why this is still in the air. It sounds like Del Toro expects the phone call, right? My best guess is that since New Line is fizzled out and all franchises and/or projects NLC had falls under the WB…that some WB execs are pushing for someone other than DeToro…and unless it is Peter Jackson, I want my own hypothosis to be strongly inaccurate!
There’s also that Doctor Strange rumor from last month concerning Del Toro and Neil Gamian, but it didn’t seem to pick up any steam.

In my ideal, utopic world Jackson would direct “The Hobbit” and Del Toro’s next project would be “At the Mountains of Madness”…*sigh*

Isn’t this due to the Tolkien estate suing New Line? Until that is resolved I doubt any work on The Hobbit can commence.
