We love our lists here, so I figured it was my sworn duty to cover this one. The list of the Top 20 Geek Movies of all time! I hold true to my geek status around here trumping even Doug and his Magic the Gathering playing and John’s occasional RPG playing.

Now the gauge of a geeky movie has to be by its quotability among geeks. So to express my favourites on the list, I will simply pay tribute to those I felt deserve this title.

And in my bonifide geek status I revel in this list. An honourable mention was given to Tron which I felt could have squeaked in there instead of Repoman. But it ranks up there as well.

i personally never hear geeks around my way quote 2001: a space odyssey, sure people have seen it, but to be number one? give it to the movie that deserves to be number one :star wars

I agree with Steven though, even though i’m sure a lot of geeks have the sound bit “Hello Dave” at the startup of their pc’s.

I think I’m the only one that didn’t like Spaceballs. I am surprised that Clerks/Clerks 2 wasn’t on the list. Didn’t anyone here like ‘Free Enterprise’?
guess it depends what type of geek you are…I personally have an affinity for Ghost World and American Splendor.
Though I’ve not seen these movies, would Napoleon Dynamite and Revenge of the Nerds qualify for this list?

I’m missing 20, 15, 11, 7, and 6. I agree that Tron and Monty Python and the Holy Grail need to be one that list. Particularly the Holy Grail, because that is way more quotable amongst geeks than half the movie you have on that list.
Being a 36 year old geek. I haven’t seen a few of the movies listed. Hackers? When I worked at a video store. People asked for that movie by saying,’you know the new computer movie with the girl with big lips.’ No one ever quoted it. I have never heard anyone quote half these movies. No Kevin Smith? No Python? No Superman 2?

Holy shit, I have seen all movies from 1 to 13! My personal favorite, #6: Brazil. “Don’t suspect a friend-Report him.” Ah, my favorite dystopian movie. Best one to use the reality/dream theme better than the Matrix sequels.

Anyway, thought some of you would get a kick out of it.
I agree that Tron would have to be on the list. I have no idea why Hackers is. I notice there isn’t ONE John Carpenter film (not even “They Live”!) but y’know something, Rodney? There is one film on this list that caught my eye.
Pirates Of Silicon Valley
Not only was it a well acted and well written film, not only did it star Anthony Michael Hall as a young Bill Gates, not only did it have the re-enactment of the Ridley Scott “1984″-ish classic superbowl commercial, but…you, and I, damn wel know ListVerse must be the ultimate in Geekdom for listing this TV movie which first aired on cable (TNT).

You’re missing Star Trek: First Contact and as No. 33 said, the Verhoeven sci-fis definitely deserve acknowledgement. I suppose Tron does, but I don’t actually like it, so I don’t give a toss about that.
Good to see the arty sci-fis - 2001 and BR - taking the top spots. They can take on Star Wars any day.

I don’t think liking a film makes you a geek. The degree that you go to in order to incorporate the film into your life is what makes you a geek. I like Star Wars, but not enough to wait in line for months. I like LOTR, but I don’t run around with the One Ring around my neck. I have no problem with people being passionate about film. God knows I love film, but some folks take it a little too far.
Well i have to admit Kristina, when i walked out of ‘Casino Royale’ i immediately went into the theatre bathroom and killed a man.

Sneakers is a notable omission. I agree with the others who said Monty Python.
And who says Hackers is not quotable? Every heard anyone say “hack the planet?” Not that it’s a great movie, I can see it being bumped from the list by some of these other films being mentioned.
