Reilly To Star in Vampire Comedy, ‘Cirque Du Freak’

Prepare for yet another John C. Reilly comedy, as he has signed on to star in the film adaptation of the popular children’s novel series, ‘Cirque Du Freak.’ The film will be also be directed by Paul Weitz. (Director of ‘About a Boy’)

Yahoo!News gives us this:

The story follows two best friends (Hutcherson, Kelly) who visit an illegal freak show, where an encounter with a vampire and a giant deadly spider forces them to make life-changing choices that result in vampire servitude and vampirism itself.
Reilly would play Larten Crepsley, the centuries-old vampire and owner of Madame Octa, the spider.

As interesting as this film’s concept sounds, I’m a little disappointed Reilly has picked yet another comedy to be apart of. What is with this trend of serious actors going comedic all of a sudden?

Take Vince Vaughn for example. He has made serious films earlier on in his career, and transitioned into making box office comedies. I do find Vince Vaughn to be quite funny, however, his “acting like a jackass” routine eventually will get old. (‘Fred Claus’ is an example of this)

Although, John C. Reilly has been on a comedic streak recently by starring in ‘Talladega Nights,’ ‘Year of the Dog,’ and ‘Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story,’ I hope he eventually returns to his roots and goes back to making various films in various genres like he used to. He may be having fun now acting like a goofball, but hey, Cuba Gooding Jr was having fun in his comedies, and look what happened to his career.

The Universal Pictures project is scheduled to start in February.

I’m certainly with you on getting J.C. Reilly back to more serious films. I’ll take “Hard Eight” over Talladega Nights any day of the week, and “Walk Hard” is the first film in ages with J.C. in a major role that I have absolutely ZERO interest in.

I read the book and I don’t remember it being much of a comedy. It was trying to be a Harry Potter substitute, so there were a couple light hearted moments, but, more so, it was kinda dark and a little edgy for a kids book.

Speaking of Cuba Gooding Jr., my husband and I just saw American Gangster last night. My husband thought that it was weird that Cuba would take such a small role, but I think that it was a good move. He’s been making absolute shit movies recently, and I think that holding his own in a supporting role acting opposite Denzel will be good for his career.

I have read all the 12 Cirque DU Freak and they arn’t anything close to a commedy they shouldn’t make the movie beause they have the wrong actors. the guy who is to play mr cresply dosn’t have a low voice and the boy looks nothing like the boy on the cover of the book I think all in all the are just going to ruin a perfectly seris

I’ve read almost the whole series and i agree with austin if they make it a comedy it will ruin the movie. i think they should stick to the storyline in the book and make the movie creepy not funny or else the movies gonna suck.
