John Woo Out - Paul W.S. Anderson To Direct Spy Hunter

I’ve been looking forward to a Spy Hunter movie with mild enthusiasm. The Rock (who has been long rumored to be the man in the lead) has a lot of natural charisma and I thought would be a perfect choice to bring a light hearted, fun adventure ride movie to us.

John Woo has been attached to the film ever since it was announced… but we’ve all heard for a long time that it looked like he would be off the film. Looks like that time has come… and in his place could be Paul W.S. Anderson. The good folks over at MovieHole give us this:

Woo – also recently removed, possibly willingly, from the “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe” movie – will no longer direct the film. Instead, the master-of-stench Paul W.S Anderson (“Alien Vs. Predator”, “Mortal Kombat”) will helm. No word on whether a new director being hired for the film has nudged The Rock out of the picture. I’m guessing it has.

So if this is true… do you think Rock would walk off the movie? I don’t think it would… as a matter of fact, this could be one of those situations where Anderson could actually be the right fit for a movie like this (don’t start throwing things at me… I never said he was a solid director… just that a project like this one could be a good match for him).

As a side note… I publicly confess that I’ve always loved the first Mortal Combat movie. My shame is great.

  1. Thank You. Im glad im not alone in the “Mortal Kombat Movie Lovers” club. I dont have much to say about Anderson, other than AvP could have been MUCH better. But hey, atleast this is one movie Boll-Shit wont get a hold of.

  2. This movioe been sitting for a while, I hope they get busy now, I mean Spy Hunter Game based on the movie (has The Rock in the game) came out last year.

  3. damn….i fucking hate Anderson, how can u mess up alien vs predator….everything is basically layed out for you….aliens..versus…predator….but no he makes a human movie….he fucked up resident evil (part 1 was decent but 2 was shit-poor, mike epps wtf)

i’m not gonna lie the 1st mortal kombat was one of the best videogame movies and event horizon was decent..but i think he’s gonna shit on this one

    peace

  4. Paul Anderson is a good fit for this film, because he’s experienced in directing action, using CGI, loves video games, and knows how to make things look cool.

  5. Anderson can handle it, if he sublimates his quirky needs long enough to tell a good story, rather than try to craft his stupid idea of cool, or artisitic.

  6. Man, this movie is DOA. Leave it alone.

On a related note, I found out yesterday that The Rock and his wife are getting divorced. YES! I got a shot now! :)

  7. This is a smart move on the studio’s part. I’ve tried based on his reputation in Chinese cinema, but I’ve never liked any of Woo’s movies. He ruined M:I-2 and Paycheck for me (Paycheck was based on one of my favorite PK Dick short stories, so there could be some bias there). Broken Arrow sits next to Stop! or My Mom Will Shoot on the list of the only movies I’ve ever walked out of. And I’m a patient man; I made it through Catwoman.

Spy Hunter does not need pointless slow-motion arial flips and white doves.

  8. I too enjoyed Mortal Kombat. The fight choreography was fun. plus I was really into marial arts and the game at the time so I enjoyed it. Quality filmmaking it was not.
