Premier’s Top 100 Greatest Movie Lines

I love lists, so when I tripped over the Top 100 Greatest Movie lines, I couldn’t resist reading them all.
The way Premier Online presents this list is a little tiresome, clicking from image to image reading their lines in their chosen order, but it was enlightening.
Premier Magazine writes:
The lines that people love most come not necessarily from the most revered films in the canon (though Casablanca and Citizen Kane are represented), but from down-to-earth comedies or action films (Ahem, “I’ll be baaack!”) that grabbed the audience on a visceral level. Whatever the genre of the film, these small bits of dialogue are important: they’re cultural shorthand, part of the language everyone shares.
I quote movie lines so often that people quite expect it from me. Many of the lines I choose are more obscure than these ones,
On that list, some of my favourites are:
88. “We find the defendants incredibly guilty.” — Jury foreman (Bill Macy) in The Producers (1967)
86. “Can I borrow your underpants for ten minutes?” — The Geek (Anthony Michael Hall) in Sixteen Candles (1984)
83. “I’m not bad. I’m just drawn that way.” — Jessica Rabbit (Kathleen Turner) in Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988)
68. “Dogs and cats living together! Mass hysteria!” — Bill Murray as Dr. Venkman in Ghostbusters (1984)
41. “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.” — Brody (Roy Scheider) in Jaws (1975)
27. “The first rule of Fight Club is you don’t talk about Fight Club.” — Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) in Fight Club (1999)
22. “May the Force be with you.” — Han Solo (Harrison Ford) in Star Wars (1977)
15. “You sly dog! You got me monologuing!” — Syndrome (Jason Lee) in The Incredibles (2004)
8. “You talkin’ to me?” — Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) in Taxi Driver (1976)
Easily #22 is the one I like the most. Sure, lots of people said that in the movies, but there is something impacting when Han “I trust a blaster at my side over some hokey religion any day” Solo says it. It has no greater meaning in the entire saga than just there.
You can click here to read the whole list proper.
96. “Yippie kay-yay, mother@#!%er.” — John McClane (Bruce Willis) in Die Hard (1988)
Excellent.
“Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.”
I love that one a lot I don’t it just gets me every time lol.
Um… I remember Hannibal Lecter saying “Good Evening Clarice” not “Hello Clarice”. He said “Hello Clarice” in Hannibal not Silence of the Lambs.
“Mein Fuhrer! I can walk!”
“Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine.”
“I’ll have what she’s having.”
How can you not love those quotes?
Funnily enough I watched Star Wars again yesterday and I was thinking how Han Solo’s “Luke…may the force be with you” line struck me as a really awkward moment in the film. I would have preferred Han to just say “…Good luck kid” or something like that. It seems better suited to his character.
Anyway, it’s still my favourite movie ever.
ADRIAN!!!!!
It’s my dad’s favorite movie, and that line holds a special place in my heart. The first time I ever saw my dad cry at a movie was when I watched Rocky with him on tv as a kid, and if you knew how much of a hardass my dad is, you’d know how big of a deal it is to see that guy cry. If I even yell that line at him, he gets a little teary.
But I know, at least recently, my friends and I have adopted THIS IS SPARTAAA!!! as our catchphrase du jour.
That list is whacked, and technically only 99 quotes, not 100
59. “Gentleman, you can’t fight here! This is the war room!” — President Merkin Muffley (Peter Sellers) in Dr. Strangelove (1964)
35. “Gentleman, you can’t fight here! This is the war room!” — President Merkin Muffley (Peter Sellers) in Dr. Strangelove (1964)
They look the same to me, so HUH?
Nice image choice. ;)
Luke, I am your father
Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.
The stuff that dreams are made of.
E.T. phone home
I love the smell of napalm in the morning.
Bond. James Bond.
Run Forest Run!
ECT
What’s that Incredibles quote doing there? Not that memorable…
Yes Bill, those two are the same.
And if you followed the link to the journal post with them all listed out it says that already.
Clearly the person who gathered and typed up all these quotes made an error. And they admitted it too.
@thesnowleopard
First of all, aww snow leopards are cute…..
Second of all, the whole point of Han saying that line was that it WAS out of his character to say something like that. It shows that for once, this douche is having a bout with his conscious. He feels bad for leaving the kid, and he says that as a way to connect with him. As soon as he said that the first time I saw that movie, I knew we’d see him again VERY SOON.
No lines by James Bond villains but one from Syndrome? I won’t have that; they can have my favourite (spoken by Hugo Drax in Moonraker):
“James Bond, you appear with the tedious inevitability…..of an unloved season”
Kristina: I understand why he was given that line, but it is a mantra of the Jedi, and Han delivers it so earnestly and sincerely, it sounds like Han was a now a true believer, rather than the cyncial, devil-may-care mercenary he always was, who thought the force was some kind of hokey religion.
Even if he had said, “Luke..I hope the Force is with you” or some such colloquial variation, it would have better suited his character AND shown he was coming around to Luke’s point of view.
I think you both have a valid point but that doesn’t stop the fact that anytime people quote that line they’re thinking of Alec, not Harrison.
It comes to no surprise, Bill Murray appears most frequently, appearing 5 times, twice as Peter Venkman.
Though my favorite has to be his half mumbled admission in Rushmore, “Yeah, I was in the shit.”
Pineapplehead - Agreed: It was Alec Guinness who made that line so famous.
“well hello Mr. Fancy Pants!” - Ashley J. Williams in Army of Darkness
How about “Just when I get out, they drag me back in!” Al Pacino in The Godfather Part 3
A few that really should have made it:
“There is another Skywalker…” - Yoda, Return of the Jedi
“No, Mr Bond, I expect you to die.” - Goldfinger, Bond film (forget the title)
“My name… is… Neo!” - Neo, Matrix
“That’s thirty minutes away. I’ll be there in ten.” - Mr Wolf, Pulp Fiction
Or so I think anyways.
Here are a few more that should have made it
“Kneel Before Zod!” - Zod, Superman 2
“Your powers are weak old man” - Vader, Star Wars
“People should not be afraid of their government, the government should be afraid of it’s people” - V, V for Vendetta
“There she IS! There she is!” - Khan, The Wrath of Khan
“I like big fat men like you, when they fall down they make more noise and sometimes they never get up!” - Tuco, The good, bad & Ugly
“I win! I always Win! Is there no one on this plante to even challenge me?” - Zod, Superman 2.
Kevin, there are other lines in Matrix to quote like “There is no spoon” and “Whoa, I know KungFu”
I think a lot of these lines are moments that MAKE the movie. Quotable quotes. Phrases that transcend meaning greater than its moment in the movie.
I think that is what the writer of the list was going for, and lots of people here are mentioning a LOT of memorable moments.
This could easily have been a top 1000 list. Keep em coming!
These darn lists. They always neglect the greatest line in the history of cinema: “They’re coming to get you Barbara!” from NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD.
96. “Yippie kay-yay, mother@#!%er.” — John McClane (Bruce Willis) in Die Hard (1988)
96th?! RIDICULOUS! That’s easily a top 80 quote.
What a really bad list.
Snakes on a Plane at #55?
Brokeback Mountain at #18?
And only TWO quotes from Ghostbusters!
Okay, I didn’t see it up there, so you all lose points for not having it.
“Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father, prepare to die.”
-Princess Bride
What a really bad list.
Snakes on a Plane at #55?
Brokeback Mountain at #18?
And only TWO quotes from Ghostbusters!
at my command, unleash hell
- gladiator
Big problem with the list….
nothing from the irreplaceable Dunst! Oh snap!
Rodney, aye, that does change the point a wee bit. Can’t believe I forgot the spoon quote.
In that case, I’ll change my choices to:
“They’re here.” - Carol Anne, Poltergeist
“Hasta la vista, baby” - T800, Terminator II
“Hold me… like you did by the lake on Naboo, so long ago… when there was nothing but our love… no politics, no plotting … no war.” - Padme Amidala, Revenge of the Sith
@Adam -
Big high five to you buddy.
That’s the one I was gonna mention.
Inconceivable!
My favorite line they left out: ”Good, bad, I’m the guy with the gun”
was I the only one that thought the top 10 was a little poor? Memorable, but good?!
Many from Matrix’s Agent Smith but here is one:
Never send a human to do a machine’s job.
I’m attached to “By the power of Greyskull!” - Danny Butterman (Nick Frost) in “Hot Fuzz”.
Sure it’s originally from a cartoon but it’s in a movie!
“badges? we ain’t got no stickin’ badges!”
“squeal like a pig!”
interesting list….but he should have called it his top 100 lines….because without
say hello to my li’l friend - scarface
coffee is for closers - glengary
italians were spawned by niggers - true romance
carpet held the room together - lebowski
this can’t be the top 100 ever….I don’t care how many starwars or startrek lines he has in there
Drop your weapons or there will be. . . . trouble - robocop
I have to agree with whoever mentioned the “No Mr. Bond, I expect you to die”
Then I’ll see you in hell ! - Han Solo from Empire. I’m not sure if it’s just because that’s the first swear I ever heard in a movie or because the entire rest of the series they’re all so civil.
I’m Batman - Batman
Don’t tug on that, you never know what it might be attached to - Buckaroo Bonzai
Why do we even have that lever ? - The emperors new groove
