Harold & Kumar 2 Starts Filming

I like my stupid comedies as much as anyone. I think Anchorman is cinematic gold. 40 Year Old Virgin and Wedding Crashers should have both been nominated for Oscars, why more people don’t love Dodgeball is totally beyond me and Zoolander deserves it’s own star on the walk of fame. So never let it be said I don’t appreciate stupid comedies. But… even I have my limits. Harold and Kumar was just plain moronic, unfunny brain dead filmmaking at it’s worst.

At least with films like 40 Year Old Virgin, you get some intelligence behind the silliness. The silliness becomes just a tool for communicating the humor… not the whole point of the humor in and of itself. That’s all Harold and Kumar was… stupidity for the sake of stupidity. “oh I’ve got an idea… let’s put in ANOTHER joke about being high”. Yeah… fun.

Anyway, ComingSoon has this for us:

the sequel to Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle has begun shooting in Shreveport, Louisiana. Eric Winter (ABC Family’s “Wildfire”) has joined John Cho (Harold) and Kal Penn (Kumar) in the untitled follow-up at Mandate Pictures and New Line. Winter plays a politician’s son who is engaged to Kumar’s ex-girlfriend.

I just don’t get it (but then again, that’s the beauty of subjectivity in film), can someone explain to me the appeal of this movie?

Let me put it this way John, if you were an adult in the 70’s you would have written this exact same article about Cheech and Chong.

Its for a subculture you know nothing about about, full of inside jokes that are only meant for some, I would think that’s why you don’t find it humorous while many other people do.

    Nord

    A subculture of stupidity?

  • 3. nautica replies at 29th January 2007, 9:35 am :

that “subculture” is asian (indian included) john. like norddeth said, there were lots of inside jokes about the northamerican asian culture and they were actually funny. for me, i found the movie’s “silliness becomes just a tool for communicating the humor” more evident than wedding crashers. now that movie was pointless and not even that funny.

When I first saw Harold & Kumar I didn’t like it at all. But I gave it another chance and now I love the film. The small things in it made me laugh most, like when Harold and Kumar are in the car driving threw a bad neighbourhood and Kumar says ”Hey look it’s a lame version of us”, then the two ”lame version” of them get they’re asses kicked.

  • 5. Ryan replies at 29th January 2007, 9:51 am :

I thought it was funny because of its unrestrained racial and crude jokes. Also the silly scenarios were just really funny - the dream sequence with Kumar marrying a bag of weed was brilliant.

    EXTREME!!!!

Speaking of Cheech & Chong… i have NEVER found any of those movies funny. Friends have showm me a few of them and…nothing. I just dont really laugh. With H&K i laughed a little bit, but probably just because there were more current social commentaries i could relate with compared to Cheech & Chong.

Also!, as someone who grew up in New Jersey… 1. There are White castles that are MUCH closer together than the ones that they try to go to, and 2. They end up in “Cherry Hill, NJ”… on a mountain where they hanglide down. I can ASSURE you, there are NO MOUNTAINS in Southern New Jersey… trust me. Look at a topographic map if you dont believe… A major complaint from U.S. Northeasterners is how FLAT Southern NJ is compared to North Jersey and all of the Northeast for that matter…

Sorry for the NJ rant… carry on.

  • 8. The Jim Walker replies at 29th January 2007, 10:25 am :

Wait! The Doogie Huaser (whatever his name is) part in that film was QUITE funny.

So, kudos to H&K for that.

Well over in the UK, we got the Classic Title
“Harold & Kumar get the Munchies”

I liked the film as much as I like the next stupid weed film, does it deserve to be on the big screen and getting a sequal?

imo, the first film should have been straight to DVD as should the second, its the type of movie you might just chuck on with a few friends round, when maybe your actually having a cheeky smoke.

for the most part i hate stupid comedies especially ones targeted at stoners, etc but i kind of dug harold and kumar go to white castle. i can’t tell you why but i did lol

  • 11. Alfredo replies at 29th January 2007, 2:20 pm :

Okay John this is why poeple like H&K:GTWC. The two protagonist are stoner lossers that don’t live up to there potential. Thus validating the life styles many people who still live at home and watch TV all day. Add part one boobies and two part girls farting on toilet and you have stoner hit.

i think the appeal of Harold & Kumar lies in the rfact it just doesn’t give a fuck about censoring any zany ideas ala Cheech&Chong ,unlike the more (& let’s be honest here) substandard fare of American Pie & similar dross regardless of how it’s marketed to the consumer on dvd as in the “UNCUT” versions etc.. i think the last movie prior to H&K was the likes of Road Trip or Freddy Got Fingered in terms of not giving a fuck.

I’ll convince you this is funny if you can convince me of one single thing that is funny about “Aqua Teen Hunger Force”.

You wanna talk about stupidity… That show is the epitome of stupid.
A chicken on fire… wow… that is mind numbingly hilarious…

  • 14. Tyler replies at 29th January 2007, 3:54 pm :

Harold and Kumar was really funny, especially Doogie Howser’s cameo, I’m looking forward to the sequel. If you want to talk about an unfunny film, pick Wedding Crashers. At least three great comedy actors and barely three decent jokes in the whole thing.

  • 15. kanthan siva replies at 29th January 2007, 3:58 pm :

A subculture of stupidity, i take offence to that john being an indian guy. The film is good and if you are either indian or asian you would have enjoyed it as there is a lot of inside jokes relating to our cultures. Any john are you not the guy who like the shadow. lollll

  • 16. kanthan siva replies at 29th January 2007, 3:59 pm :

also wedding crashers and zoolander were awful.. you are the most easily pleased film critic out there

Anybody else find it sad that THIS can get greenlit and Indy 4 is in developmental hell? Does God exist?

  • 20. nautica replies at 29th January 2007, 7:37 pm :

kristina, indy 4 is in stuck in development hell because the only 3 people that can make it happen are deciding not to make it happen. if lucas, speilberg and ford want to, they can make the movie. nobody can stopping them, not even god!

  • 21. nautica replies at 29th January 2007, 7:37 pm :

oops i meant “stop” not stopping.

  • 24. Kaneda979 replies at 29th January 2007, 11:58 pm :

I love the first one. I couldn’t stop laughing the whole way threw from begining to end the first time I saw it. Way funnier then Wedding Crashers, think I might of laughed 3 times durring the first time I saw it.

For me its hard to understand why someone didn’t find the first Harold & Kumar funny and I don’t know anyone personaly that doesn’t love it. Maybe it’s just not your thing. I can’t wait to see the 2nd one.

  • 25. Jarek replies at 30th January 2007, 11:23 am :

If you listened to the writer’s commentary, they went out of their way to make fun of the “extreme” culture. Add asshole cops to that, social commentary of the injustices blacks suffer, posers, slackers in the workplace, etc. It was a fantastic film and my friends and I have loved watching it together.

Plus Neil Patrick Harris playing himself was awesome, and the fact that I assume a lot of us could relate to going out for a special place for food late at night (it would be Taco Bell for me and my friends).

It’s not for the older crowd, unless they can remember to back when they were younger or have that type of experience in the workplace.
