Ok, in day 3 of my “Top 10″ lists, I present to you my favorite Guilty Pleasure movies. Now, we should first define “guilty pleasure” here since I’ve seen about 10 definitions. For the purposes of this post, “guilty pleasure” is going to refer to movies that most people think sucks (probably rightly so) but for one reason or another I love watching. So, here we go:
1) Cool As Ice - Oh yes hommies, the Vanilla Ice spectacular. Everytime I watch this thing we laugh until we cry. “Yup yup she likes me”. “Drop that zero and git wit da Hero”. Pure cinematic gold I tell you!!! Just look at Vanilla! He’s so cool! Some would suggest cool as ice even. HAHAHA! Oh shut up.
2) Megaforce - Silver body suits never looked so good! An eliete military anti-terrorism organization that belongs to no one government equipped with all the cool new sci-fi like gadgets… oh yeah… and their leader’s name is “Ace”. YeeaaaHaaaa!
3) Oscar - Sylvester Stallone’s jump into comedy. Everyone hates this movie… but I thought it was freaking hilarious. The Kirk Douglas cameo was awesome too.
4) Death to Smoochy - What the hell is everyone’s problem?!?! I decided not to see Death to Smoochy in the theaters because almost EVERY SINGLE critic hated it… and almost all my friends who saw it hated it… so I gave it a pass. Then, about a year ago, a friend brought the dvd over to my buddy’s place and so reluctantly agreed to watch it and proceeded to LAUGH OUR BLOODY ASSES OFF!!! This film is gold! Why does everyone hate it so much?!?!
5) Moulin Rouge - It’s odd putting a film that was nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars on a “guilty Pleasures” list… but I honestly find most people didn’t like this movie. I just can’t understand why. This was a beautiful styleized film. Oh well… maybe it’s just me. But come on! Who doesn’t love a movie with a Narcoleptic Argentinian?
6) UHF - The Weird Al Yankovic film that to this day makes me spit my coke out of my nose. And before there was Kramer on Seinfeld, Michael Richards was Stanley Spadowski bitches!!!
7) Daredevil - Wow everyone hates this movie. I mean REALLY hates it. But I can’t help it… I LOVED it. Saw it in the theaters 4 times and bought the DVD when it came out. HAHAHA! Oh yeah… one of my favorite soundtracks to a movie too.
8) Rocky V - Yeah… another one I have to keep a secret. For some reason, this poorly made film has qualities that really stuck with me. I enjoyed the film… yikes!
9) Armageddon - Bruce Willis, Michael Clarke Duncan, Owen Wilson, Steve Buscemi, Will Patton, Billy Bob Thornton and Ben Affleck. Great cast… fun movie… some hilarious lines… and yes… some REALLY BAD CHEESE. But what can I tell ya? I still watch this one at least once a year.
10) Hook - The Dustin Hoffman/Robin Williams “Peter Pan” movie. I confess, I LOVE this movie. I don’t own it, but I stop whatever I’m doing and watch it whenever it’s on TV. Guilty.
So there you have it, my soul laid bare and confessions made for all to see. Now it’s your turn. What films do you love to watch, that almost everyone else hates?

“Death to Smoochy” and “Hook” aren’t guilty pleasures - they’re FANTASTIC movies.
My guilty pleasure is “Josie and the Pussycats.” Oh, Rachel Leigh Cook…sigh.

Two guilty pleasures for me:
1. Cop and a Half - This movie came out in the early 90’s and featured a pint-sized Gary Coleman wannabe paired with a delightfully grumpy Burt Reynolds. I actually own this on DVD because the comedic value is priceless. The kid in the movie (Devon) can’t act worth a damn but that’s what makes it so funny. If you haven’t seen this, go ahead and Netflix it and give it a shot. “He’s an 8 year old with a badge!”
2. Ghostbusters II - I know the original is a classic and adored by all, but I’ve always had a slight preference for the sequel. The main comedic draw besides Bill Murray here is Sigorney Weaver’s (Dana Barrett’s) creepy boss, Yanosh, played brilliantly by Peter MacNicol of Ally Mcbeal fame. My brother and I have watched this about 50 times (mostly because it was one of those movies that HBO played all summer one year when we were growing up) and can quote just about every line. “Yeah, I know bassmasters.”

Moulin Rouge has the honor of being the worst and most overrated movie ever in my eyes. But i ahte musicals

J Dogg
Agree on Moulin Rouge being so overrated. I rented it back when it was up for the Oscar and I had to turn it off after abour 20 minutes. It annoyed the crap out of me. And I liked Chicago a lot, so it’s not the musical aspect.

Lord Jim
I have so many that are guiltly pleasures, but the one I take the most flak on is:
Remo Williams, The Adventure Begins
“Women should stay home and make babies. Preferably, manchild.” Joel Gray to Kate Mulgrew (Captain Janeway)
“Remo Williams: Chiun, you’re incredible!
Chiun: No, I am better than that.”
Oh yeah!

Oh man. Death to Smoochy is freakin’ gold. I LOVE that movie. And for the first time EVER I saw UHF a few weeks ago and laughed so hard….Oh man. That’s classic. My list:
1)Legally Blonde (I don’t own it but when it’s on TV….yeah)
2)A Cinderella Story (I secretly really like Hilary Duff and her goody goody appeal. I can’t help myself).
3)Anne of Green Gables (yes, the made for TV movie)
4)Final Fantasy - The Spirits Within
5)Big Trouble in Little China (that lightning….classic)
6)A Walk to Remember (another teeny bopper sappy love story)
7)Elektra (laugh all you want. I love the chick with the power to suck the life out of everything living. That scene where she’s walking along the forest killing everything with a touch…nice)
8)Jersey Girl (this got a bad wrap thanks to the Benifer ordeal. It’s a cute story that I really enjoy)
9)The Family Man (the reviews on this one weren’t very good but I really enjoyed it. I’ve seen it countless times)
10)Johnny Mnemonic

I’M BACK! Thank God! I had a hard time getting on the DAMN computer thus week!
Okay, Death to Smoochy, I like it! I think Danny DeVito is a bit underrated as a director, cause I liked to dark mood in his movie!
Armageddon, that was my favorite movie as a kid. I haven’t watched it in a long time, but I didn’t care when I heard a lot critism from it. Then again, IT’S A MICHAEL BAY Popcorn MOVIE! Besides, I’d prefer a fuckin’ action movie with machines than a love story (OH, SNAP!).
Let me show ya my list:
Cellular- It may be cheesey, but the story was okay. At least I cared about the characters.
Day of the Dead- Not one of Romaro’s best, but I think it was still enjoyable.
1941- Spielberg’s first flop. I liked it though. Who would’ve done a comedy on Pearl Harbor to Hollywood?! Only the producer of Transformers! Hey, flops can’t stop Steven, bitches!
Resident Evil/ Resident Evil: Apocalypse- CHEESEY gaming movie. It has that fun factor to me, but a great example on video-game movie adaptions.
Alexander- Yes, that’s right! Oliver Stone’s flop of 2004! The film Roger Ebert called the “Worst of 2004″! So what in God’s name who lure me to this movie? The fact that it is MUCH better than Catwoman. I watched it, and I think it is pretty good. BUT EVERYONE HAS A RIGHT TO HATE, LOTHE, AND BURN IT!
I could have more, but everyone could take care of that. I think this is missing one movie one your list, John; Hulk.
Later ;-)

Here’s the Sealer’s. Run, hide, and don’t forget to duck!
In full disorder, here comes the choas:
1) ‘American Ninja’
["He possess great skills!", and a mild fight scene involving a garden hose and a water bucket, and of course, good swordfights/ninja fu.
2) "Blue Monkey".
Starring Steve Railsback ans John Vernon. Watch for a real young Sarah Polley in Willam Fruet's film about a mutated giant bug that wrecks mayhem in a quarantined hospital. Sony: please put this on DVD. My VHS copy is gettin' old!
3) "The Perfect Weapon"
Another film on VHS that hasn't gotten a DVD release yet. I know Paramount sees these freakin' posts...anyway, Jeff Speakman takes on the local Korean mobsters and thugs. Watch for: a young Dante Brasco (he was also in "Hook", and the recent "Take The Lead") and a pre-Law & Order SVU Mariska Hagitay...with long hair and...NO LINES?! What's up with that?
4) "Oscar"
Stallone's underrated performance is good; but Tim Curry is great! So is Martin Ferrero! AND Marisa Tomei! Did I mention Don Ameche? Very funny movie.
5) "Zero Effect"
The mysterious, eccentric life of super detective Dayrl Zero, played by Bill Pullman. Ben Stiller is his "employee".
6) "DareDevil" [both versions]
The Original cut grew on me, and while I thought they didn’t lose much with Coolio in the DC, and they gained little with the schoolyard fight, if you look at through the POV of the main character,it isn’t so bad. Besides, Radar sense rules.
7) “Death To Smoochy”. What John said.
8) “The Hunted”
Not the Tommy Lee Jones/ Friedkin film, but, yes, a “modern day” Ninja/Samurai film with a Highlander stuck in the middle (yuk yuk). Written &directed by JF Lawton , lensed part in Japan, it has a nice enegy to it. Also introduced me to the Japanese music troupe/perfoming artists known as Kodo. [Note: folks, you got to also see 'Kodo Live At The Acropolis'. It'll blow your mind]
9) “Mary Reilly”
Julia Roberts without fashion makeup; John Malcovich as Dr. Jeckyll/Mr. Hyde. Directed by Stephen Frears, a wonderful gothic film; but got trashed because…well, Julia Roberts wears no fashion makeup and does not smile.
10) “Cutthroat Island”
Another film with a bad rap; it actually isn’t too bad. Matthew Modine seems to be in more good spirits than Geena Davis though. Helmed by her ex-hubby Renny Harlin, the only real downside is that it was a runaway production and brung down Carlaco.
**********
Almost made the cut: “Waterworld”, (Stephen King’s) “Graveyard Shift”, “Planet Of The Apes” [Tim Burton], and “Impostor”

John, after reading your list I am totally baffled by the lack of love you have for Pee Wee Herman. Pee Wee’s Big Adventure is a great movie. I watched it last week and I had to turn it off during the scene where Pee Wee is on the train with the old guy with no teeth because I was laughing so hard.
Also, not a bad movie but WarGames is a big favorite of mine that isn’t exactly an Oscar contender.
Sep 8th, 2006
Mr Stay Puft
You’re a brave man, John. I think every movie on that list is really, really bad. So I don’t come across as a mean-spirited coward, here are mine:
Swordfish: I saw this in the theater and liked it so much I slipped into another show to watch the end again. Halle Berry’s finest film role.
Van Helsing: I bit of a disappointment, but Kate Beckinsale was never hotter and I loved Frankenstein.
The early Dolph Lundgren movies: Masters of the Universe, Rocky IV, The Punisher, Army of One, Universal Soldier, Johnny Mneumonic and my two favorites - I Come in Peace and Showdown in Little Tokyo. Pairing Dolph with Van Damme in Universal Soldier was cool, but pairing him with Brandon Lee in Showdown in Little Tokyo was cinematic gold.
I also love Rapid Fire with Brandon Lee.

Question John.
Which version?
I read all the negative reviews for “Daredevil” and passed on it. Best Buy a long while ago on release week had the director’s cut for like $13.00. On a lark I picked it up. I liked A LOT. The reviews on the DVD release were pretty much the same - this should’ve been what was released in theaters. I later bought the theatrical version, since it was a two disc set with all the bonus features. I have yet to watch the theatrical movie.
So? Which version of “Daredevil” are you talking about?

Oh my God John, when I first saw your top 10 most hated films list I thought how sad, it’s strong but yet incomplete. Yes Deuce Bigalow was on it so you had a strong understanding of what it really takes to be a absolute piece of crap movie. But I thought he missed the all time worst film ever. I mean the one the wins any movie debate. The one that sucks more than any movie has ever sucked before. He must not even know about it. Some Movie Guy, but no my friend you saved it. You knew it was out there and it made number one. Cool as Ice is such a horrible movie. I applaud you for having the courage to be honest. If this is your favorite guilty pleasure movie, then more power to you. You are a brave man to list it.
Way to keep it real.

JWP
Too many to lists, but here are a few….
Van Helsing (I liked this movie a lot)
Pee Wee’s Big Adventure
Big Trouble in Little China
Killer Clowns from Outerspace
The ‘Burbs (my wife thinks it sucks)
UHF (you get to drink from the water hose!!!)
DareDevil (not as bad as everyone makes it out to be)
Transylvania 6-5000
Bad Boys II
Deuce Bigalow (either one — nothing’s funnier than the ridiculous names that they have for sexual acts that each He-Bitch will perform)
Dude Where’s My Car (aannnnnnnnnddddddddddddd tthhhhhhhhhennnnnn???)
A lot of the other movies people listed out were great too….which creates the question whether these movies really are considered to be that bad and unliked when it appears that many of us are entertained by watching them?
Sep 8th, 2006
JJ
The Director’s Cut of DareDevil is awesome. I have watched it many times since purchasing it for a very reasonable $9 at Target. I thought the theatre release was pretty decent, but this version blows it away. I really think it would have done a lot better with critics, fanboys and the general public if it had been sent to the big screen.

This is going to be fun…
10. Showgirls - And an even guiltier pleasure was watching it on TNT with the computer generated bikinis covering the naughty bits. I had side pains I laughed so hard.
9. Independence Day - On my ten worst list, but camp value is as big as the plot holes.
8. Tie: Plan 9 from Outer Space, Bride of the Monster and Glen and Glenda - The once and future king of all bad movies
7. Batman - No not the Michael Keaton version, but the wonderfully camp version with Adam West and Burt Ward. “There are some days when you just can’t get rid of a bomb.”
6. Pink Flamingos - Great gross out film by John Water’s, although Divine probably had trouble getting a dinner date after this film.
5. Tie: In Like Flint and Our Man Flint - I’m showing my age. Great James Bond spoof with the great James Coburn.
4. Beyond the Valley of the Dolls - Written by Roger Ebert, Directed by the great breastmaster Russ Meyer, The insperation for Josie and the Pussycats, excuse my language, but what a great fucking film.
3. Lost in Space - Like I said on my worst list. Very Bad, Horrible film and I loved every second of it.
2. Shakes the Clown - The great Bobcat Goldwaith in the “Citizen Kane” of alcoholic clown films!
1. Desperate Living - Nude lesbian scene with 90 lb white woman and a 400 lb black woman and the funniest self mutilation castration scene ever put on film. John Waters does it again.

Wow John, I’m glad you put “Oscar” in your list because that’s actually my favotite Sly movie. Yup, in my opinion, better than Rocky and Rambo

Chark Hammis
Fredo-
Isn’t the dude who looks like Billy Ray the movie loving, good humored priest John has on from time to time?
Ok- on to my list-
Chronicles of Riddick:
Bloated? Silly dialogue? Brother, wrap that shit up with crazy planets, awesome set design, solid action and brow raising FX and give it to me on a sesame seed bun. Delicious any time of day.
The Mummy Returns:
Rotten, rotten, rotten CGI. Pygmies. Scorpion The Rock. But damned if it isn’t fun as a room full of Campeas.
Pearl Harbor:
Loathed by many. Loved by me. With every frame Bay shoots worthy of a post card, a WW II centric story and explosions and planes blowing the piss out of everything Hawaii- this film gets dusted off every couple of months to give my home theater a run for its money.
Kung Pow:
Enter the Fist: Juvenile. Poorly executed. Painfully strained. Naturally, I Laughed til I squirted pee in my underbritches. “Weeeee-OOOOOOOH!”
Aliens Versus Predator:
Paul WS Anderson, you pissed on all history developed by these two franchises. Opened the door for Fox to film AVP 2 in a Kmart in 2007. And yet… yet… it’s Aliens and Predators and all the shenanigans that entails.
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within:
Pseudo spiritual Japanese Gya story put many to sleep. Cool soldiers, blluts that blow the stuffing out of ghosts and other generally cool looking Japanese sci-fi-ery make for gorgeous, slick looking escapism.
Equilibrium: Damned if this doesn’t look cheap as a dime store hooker. Monochromatic Cadillacs. Motorcycle helmeted soldiers. Cute l’il puppies. But Gunkata. Sweet Gunkata. And Christian Bale. You had me at “Once the door’s down, blow the bulbs.”
One Fine Day: George Clooney is one smooth bastard. The banter and wit between Pfeifer and Clooney in this charming, feel good chick flick had me all smiley and in the mood for love.
Reign of Fire: Dragons. Tanks. Helicopters. Bale. Played straight. Beautifully shot. Unappreciated genre masterpiece.
Behind Enemy Lines. Heavy American message. A slightly miscast Owen Wilson. But dude. F-18s. Shootin. Scene chewing Gene Hackman. Pop Video cinematography and one of THE most intense dogfighting scenes (with a pair of missiles no less) ever. Love it.

Must reply to this one:
1) Any Star Trek movie, except Insurrection but including Nemesis.
2) Any Sylvester Stallone movie except Judge Dredd - even Oscar!
3) Grease - infectious and fun
4) Twister - watch this during thunderstorms for that surround effect
5) The Black Hole - Disney’s first PG movie still gets me geeked
6) Young Doctors In Love - early Michael Richards - funny!
7) My Chauffeur - 4 words…”Give me them panties!!”
8) Hamburger The Movie - funnier laxative scene than Dumb & Dumber
9) Smokey & The Bandit - great car, great soundtrack, great cast
10) Something’s Gotta Give / As Good As It Gets - I skewered ol’ Jack in my 10 worst (About Schmidt) so I had to give him props in these two films I can’t get enough of.
Honorable mention: John Ritter in Hero At Large, about an actor who assumes the identity of a super-hero. It recently made it to DVD, and I bought it as soon as I found it. 80’s camp, but fun.

I never got the Daredevil hate. Sure, it could have been better, but I didn’t think it was terrible. Some of the stuff was fantastic - the bar scene was the Miller comics brought to life.

Hook was a great movie. I don’t care what anybody says. CLASSIC. And if you’ve actually read the original Peter Pan book, you’ll notice that Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffmin say lines from the book and it just makes it an even more…just classic film and just real special. I don’t know. I think it just adds a certain “bling” to it.

1. Mortal Kombat (both) - I know they are cheesy as hell but they are so much fun.
2. Resident Evil - God A LOT of people hate this movie. I guess it’s because it’s a game adaptation…
3. Legally Blonde - NOT the type of film I usually like, not at all. But I just for some reason really, really liked this.
4. Kung Pow - Really cheesy as hell but also fun as hell! And I laughed my ass off!
5. Daredevil - (I agree with John here) I really loved this film a lot. But everyone else DIDN’T…
6. Hulk - I am definitely in the minority here but I just for some reason enjoyed this film tremendously.
7. Little Nicky - This is always hailed as one of Sandler’s worst but it’s my favourite.
8. The Faculty - My biggest guilty pleasure horror flick. I was totally entertained the whole way through.

I totally agree with your definition of guilty pleasures. Four of my favs made your list as well, Moulin Rouge, Daredevil, Hook, and, my personal Number 1, Oscar. (I honestly believe that very few people “got” that movie) How could you not love it with Tim Curry, Maressa Tomei, and Kirk Douglas?
Additional guilty pleasures of mine are:
My Cousin Vinny
Night Shift
Love Story
Forever Young
High Road to China
and, yes, I admit, Kiss of the Spiderwoman.

How can anyone not absolutely love that movie, I want to marry it and have little tiny top guns, And you know what, I was a massive fan of pearl harbour too and I almost cried at the end of armageddon, My biggest guilty pleasure of all but is teenwolf, man I loved that movie, it was a great coming of age tale about a poor werewolf just trying to make his way in the world, Micheal J Fox, I bow down to u

Kung Pow: Enter the Fist. There, I said it. Seriously, I laugh my self silly every time I watch it. As for Death to Smoochy I sorta enjoyed it as well but feel that it tried to play violent slapstick off as dark comedy, and there is a BIG difference between these two forms of humor.
