Raiders Of The Lost Ark Commentary Is Here!!!

RaidersWell here it is folks, our very first (released) movie commentary track. We selected an amazing film for our inaugural trek. Raiders of the Lost Ark!!! Man this movie is amazing!

Ok folks, here’s the thing… we are offering this MP3 commentary for FREE. But… (there is always a but) the file is over 100 megs large… which means my bandwidth bill is going to be insane. Soooo… while we are offering this commentary track for free, we are requesting… no asking… no no no… BEGGING that you would consider making a donation for your 2 hours of entertainment.

We’re asking that you consider is pitching $2 or $4 our way… or even $10 or $100… but honestly, we’d take anything.

The commentary features myself (John Campea), Darren Conely, Bruxy Cavey and Doug Nagy.

We’re hoping this will at least pay for itself so that we can make this a regular thing. We already have ideas on how to make the next one better… we’ll continue to improve.

You can download the Commentary here.
Please also consider making a donation by clicking the button:

**UPDATE** - Guys, thank you so much for your generosity. You guys have already donated more than enough to cover any expenses for the bandwidth on this thing… all the extra I’m going to give to Darren and Doug and Bruxy. But do keep giving if you feel so inclined. I’m personally able to scrape out a living by doing The Movie Blog, but these guys have done everything for 100% free. Everything you donate from this point on goes directly to them. Just wanted to be upfront with you guys so you know where everything is going now. Cheers!

Here’s hoping the commentary enhances the experience! Will be sure to donate some money once I get my paypal account sorted…

I’ve sent you a donation John, not for the commentary (because i haven’t heard it yet) but for the hours of entertainment you’ve already given me on the audio edition, for reading our posts, and for taking the time to do a commentary at all.

If you ever do one for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan i’ll send you some Jewish gold i stole from Switzerland.

P2P is definately the way to go when bandwidth is limited. I took the liberty of creating a torrent of the commentary (I hope this is OK, John). I wasn’t quite sure where to put it, since I don’t know of any free trackers, so I ended up with mininova. Also, this is the first torrent I’ve created so I don’t know if it actually works for others, but I’m seeding and I urge everybody else that has downloaded the commentary to do the same thing.

    just started listening

next time it would be nice if you did the sync up a little better. Cause you never really say when to start the movie. I tried starting the commentary and the film at the exact same time…but that made the commentary a little behind the film

other than that it’s great so far

    Hey John,

I’m downloading the commentary right now, excellent idea. I’ve never considered outside commentaries before. Anyways, the main reason I ask is because I’d also like to know the proper way of syncing this up. Thanks.

PS: I agree with the previous commentors-look into making these into torrents, or at least put a direct download and a torrent available so that those of us who can use it will save you some bandwidth. Keep up the good work!

  • 18. Jeff replies at 29th August 2006, 6:47 pm :

Torrents are definately the way to go John.

Synching things up should be easy too. The listeners should have heard you talking about the Paramount logo coming up. Well, it seems pretty obvious to me, that that is where the movie begins, so play the movie, then hit play on the commentary when you see the logo. There will never be 100% perfect synching, but it’ll be close.

Also you might get yourself some more readers out of this option if they see your torrent on the site and get curious about your website.

Im going to repost the torrent elsewhere and link it back to the http://www.judymoodymovie.com

    About Bitorrent

A number of you have suggested usig bit torrent. The problem (As Leo Laporte pointed out) is that the majority of internet users still don’t use it. Thus, if I just put it up as a torrent… I’d be excluding a lot of people from it.

I just like to make things available and not force anyone to use any technology they don’t want to.

Thanks for the input though guys!

Bullshit, who are you to give commentary on another film makers movie. I have had the up most respect for you John until today. I must say your ego and head are getting far to big for this website. I agree that offering _only_ a torrent will be limiting the download to users ‘in the know’. I wasn’t saying that you should only provide a torrent.
What I’m suggesting is that you should provide the torrent as an alternative, in addition to the regular download. That way people who know what a torrent is can use the torrent to help share the bandwith, and the ones who doesn’t know can still download it using conventional means.
By providing both a regular download and a torrent (and suggesting the users to use that, of course) you should get the best of two worlds :)

These guys have every right to discuss a movie and post the audio. That’s what they do!!!! John isn’t charging for it. He simply appealed to those who enjoy the content to help out if they feel like it.

I liked the idea. I listened to and liked the commentary and hope there are more in the future. I also made a donation. If you don’t like it, don’t download it. If you don’t want to support the site, then don’t. If you want to eat a dick, go ahead. Settle down.

You start off your commentary from the go. People who have the MP3 need to sync it with the movie. What you need to do in the future is keep it on the menu screen for a moment while you chat, then do a countdown to “Play”.

Damn you Campia! I’ve honored myself by using my 100mbit to suck the Internets dry for the last few years. Going out of my way to not spend a penny more than I absolutely have to on entertainment. Other than going to the movies, which is an experience “the scene” hasn’t been able to recreate for free yet, and a tiny amount of dvds and the odd drunken itunes purchase, I haven’t stumbled off from the path of grenchly enlightenment. I therefore conclude that you must be in the service of the devil, seeing how I just wasted 3 bucks on your Paramount free riding arse.

GOD!! please save me from the burning of my newfound soul.

..and use bittorrent next time like they say, it’s idiotproof. At least with a few guidelines. =)

  • 48. nekosaur replies at 30th August 2006, 10:05 am :

    Excellent choice of movie :)

Like previous posters I also recommend you offer a torrent download for the people who use it. It’ll definately help keep the bandwidth usage down. Regarding the synching of sound and video, the mentioning of the Paramount logo fade out gives you a pretty good reference point. You can also faintly hear the movie in the background of the commentary (after the volume is turned up :)).

Really looking forward to the next one.

  • 49. Jason replies at 30th August 2006, 10:20 am :

John, instead of torrents, you should put the link to download on a seperate page by itself with a few CPM ads. I’m not exactly sure how much traffic your site gets, but you should be able to make a decent amount off that. If not, you can always throw up a pop under on that page as well :).

  • 50. Jason replies at 30th August 2006, 10:24 am :

Sorry for the extra comment, but I thought of something else.

Another thing I’ve found out with donations is that as soon as people start ‘donating’ money to your site, they feel like they own a small portion of it even though the definition of donation is a gift, as to a fund; contribution. So then in return you get annoying people trying to tell you what to do.

    Anyway, hope that helps.

Are you going to do future commentaries this same way, or force people to pay?

If this works, I’d say it’s an awesome way of doing it.

  • 53. John Campea replies at 30th August 2006, 10:59 am :

    Hey there Henrik

    That’s a great question.

To be honest, this has me thinking about charging for it in the future. It doesn’t take much to pay the bandwidth… but it would be a great way for me to throw some money Doug and Darren’s way for all the effort and work they put into the Audio Editions and the commentaries.

Not sure yet… still thinking about it. What do you think?

    ~John

  • 54. Henrik replies at 30th August 2006, 11:03 am :

I think you should do it this way.

Even so… If the guys don’t want to do it because it’s fun, but only because they will get money of it, that is probably not a great model either I’d say. So if you started getting paid, it may backfire.

I say keep it like this, and only do it whenever you get excited about it. Don’t do it for the money.

  • 55. John Campea replies at 30th August 2006, 11:14 am :

    Hey Henrik,

Well, I see where you’re coming from… but they’ve been doing it for nothing for over a year. I think that already proves they do love it.

I get paid for doing The Movie Blog… and I LOVE it. But the reality is that I put a LOT of time into the site and everything it does.

Darren drives 45 minutes each way to get here for The Audio Edition… in total that’s 3-4 hours each Monday he sets aside for you guys.

Doug is the same deal… except he drives like 25 minutes each way.

I’m not talking about them making a living from it… but I sure think it would be nice to at least throw something their way to show appreciation. If for nothing else than to cover their food and gas and time.

It’s really easy to say “You should only do it if you love it… don’t charge”, when you get to sit and download and enjoy it for free. it’s another issue when you’re the people doing all the work for everyone else to enjoy.

Once again, I’m just talking about being able to throw these guys a tolken ammount to show appreciation… and honestly, I don’t think the “donation” model will work. So far, the commentary has been downloaded over 2000 times since last night… 11 people have donated.

That means about 0.5% of the people who downloaded it actuall contributed anything. I don’t know that that works. We’ll just have to see.

    Thanks for the input Henrik!

Of course I read the whole thing. I realize you weren’t trying or even doing it on purpose.

You did said it was easy though. Which is pretty belittling in my book. I don’t have a beef with you for it, just trying to call it to your attention I guess. If you honestly don’t want to belittle it, just don’t call it easy, no?

Ultimately you can do whatever you want.

On the entire issue of pay for service, I’d say that you should have a small fee for the downloading of these commentaries. I don’t think it’s too much to ask people to give you a couple of bucks to cover the bandwith costs and a little extra. Personally, I agree with Charlie. It’s had to come by good entertainment and the fact that you do the Audio Edition for free (which I nearly popped a lung listening to this morning - on public transit - I swear everyone thought I was crazy) I don’t mind paying for the commentaries. And seriously, what’s a few bucks for 2 hours of entertainment?

Great job. Can’t wait to actually listen to it!

  • 63. tri-lam replies at 30th August 2006, 2:14 pm :

I’d really think about this John and take the time to make the right decision for The Movie Blog at this stage in its evolution. There is a difference between donation and outright sale as far as the perception of those “buying” the product goes. I don’t know why exactly, but I was happy to donate, but may not have “purchased” the download. I know that makes little sense in reality, because i’m sure I spent more in a donation than you would have charged for the download. Maybe eventually when/if you have a catalog of commentaries you could charge iTunes style for them. I don’t know. I donated because I love the site, love the audio edition and loved the fact that you guys put together a track and offer them all to us for nothing. I guess what I am saying is that feeling part of a community is something different than feeling like a customer. Now having said that, if the content of The Movie Blog continues to be great and gets better and better and more and more features are offered, then if it were my site I would at leats entertain the idea of going to some sort of subscriber/premium member system as well as an a-la-carte pay-per special feature download system. There are a couple of sites that I belong to as a premium member that offer “regular” content for free and “premium” content and features for a pretty nominal membership fee. To be more direct, I would consider leaving the current features of the site free to all visitors and putting things like large downloads (ie commentaries, etc) as “premium” content. It’s tough to control something like an mp3 commentary track. It is so easily shared, etc. I think you could make the money to cover your expenses for now with a few “premium members.” I’d like to see the Blog redesign incorporate some sort of member profile/ log-in system like the one we use at http://www.chiptalk.net or a lot of other sites and incarnations. It depends, I suppose, on whether you want this to be a “community” or more of YOUR site with us commenting on stuff. I don’t know, i’ve rambled on excessively now. Just the thoughts dripping like textual diarrhea from my figurative mental sphincter. Thanks for the great site in any event and for the effort you guys put into entertaining us.

For your movie commentaries it would be cool if you had a podcast. I don’t think the files would be as big.

  • 65. Chris replies at 30th August 2006, 4:23 pm :

First commment ever, long time listener.

John, I think it’s obvious to everyone that you released it this way because you wanted to have a few dollars to pass around from this. I think that’s great. They deserve it. As soon as I get paid tomorrow, I’m making a donation. However, I would bet you that money most people feel the way I do about it…. just be honest and up front about it from the beginning.

Why do I feel this way? Because there are so many ways to distribute this on the internet in a way that does not cost you a cent. You know these ways, or you need to learn more about the internet. I don’t believe that second part is true. So it brings an element of distrust in to the equation. You need to see these things.

I noticed also that as soon as you put up the amendment to your post about getting enough to cover the expenses and are now giving the rest of the money to the other 3 guys on the site, you put the file up on iTunes. Very interesting. I also noticed that this commentary was just under 2 hours in length and you needed to charge for it to pay for bandwidth. But the Audio Edition from Monday was almost an hour and a half, without a charge. Also, many of your audio editions go well over an hour, or close to, without any charge. It all just adds up to making you all this look wrong.

I understand needing to charge to cover the costs of ths site after all this time and have some extra money to give to other guys. I’m all for that. I think that’s what you’ve tried to do here. But you weren’t up front about it. Be up front about it and let the chips fall where they may.

One last thing, charging for your site on a continual basis is something I would probably participate in. But, it will drastically change this site. Think about it for a long time before you do it.

Hope you know that I love the Movie Blog! :-)

Hey Chris, thanks for your comments.

    1) As a matter of fact, I did try using a torrent a few months ago with the Audio Edition… it was a misserable failure and I got lots of complaints. I am willing to try it again.

    2) The commentary went up on iTunes right away. It just automatically puts them up as soon as a new MP3 file is linked to from the site. I wasn’t trying to limit it’s distribution at all.

    3) Darren and Doug will tell you, that I never thought for a moment that anyone would give anything at all. The moment we got a few bucks, enough to pay for itself, I immediately let everyone know that the costs were covered and if they wanted to still give, it would be going to Doug and Darren. I was 100% transparent about that.

    4) Paying for The Audio Editon is something I have resigned myself to doing. It doesn’t make any money for the site, and is just an expense I have chosen to eat. HOWEVER… Audio commentaries are a differnt matter all together. For us to do them, I needed them to pay for themselves. I’m actually not rich… I can’t accept just eating another expense of the site. I’m ok with just paying for the Audio Editoins myself… but I’m not ok with paying for Commentaries… those have to pay for themselves.

    5) Yes, it has always been the plan that if the commentary made more than a couple of bucks, the rest would go to Darren, Bruxy and Doug. But as I said above… I never thought it would come to that.

Thanks again for your comments. Hope that clears things up.

    ~John

    Thanks John,

I know I don’t see things your way because I don’t have all the information. I posted from my vantage point and on how things look from where I was sitting. Paying for extra things, and even the regular material, is not something I’m opposed to. I worry what that would do the site, but I’m sure you’re thinking of that.

Sorry I missed the iTunes thing. I updated my podcasts yesterday and it wasn’t on there, and I updated today and it was. So that’s why I thought you just recently uploaded the commentary to iTunes.

    Peace, brother.

No problem… all questions are good questions. :)

    Hi John,

    just a question.

You get paid for doing the movie blog, yet all of your subscibers who log in every week and download the audio edition, including myself get this content for free..

So I am guessing you get paid for doing the movie blog because you have sponsors and you have the advertising up on the site??

The great thing about internet content is when you can atract people to come and see your site and get your content but can do it for free. But everyone needs to earn money to survive but you are still doing this because you get paid by the sponsors?? Am I correct in assuming this?? For people to be able to get your content for free encourages people to subscribe because its no loss to them, and if you do your content right, (which you do) people will come back and more people will join and you will soon a huge following. Huge following equals more money you can get from your sponsors because they are reaching a bigger audience??

As soon as you throw paying for the content into the equation, you may lose some interest.. (I know in this case its a donation based system and you are up front about it) its harsh but i guess thats reality.

My point is, is there any way you can make these commentaries sponsored so people can get it for free, but you still make something for doing it, you can then help to pass some of this on to doug, darren and bruxey??

Also on the bittorrent thing, do try to keep it as an option, while not a lot of people here might use it, all the people who have never heard of you who troll bittorrent sites looking for stuff and see your commentary and get curious and download it might then come and see your site. So instead of some of your current subscibers not being able to get the content, in the end you might end up getting new subscibers.

    Thanks

    Hi John,

Very much enjoyed the commentary, and kudos on your choice of film to kick things off with. For future editions, are you planning on sticking with fun classics like Raiders, or are you leaning towards more contemporary releases? Just wondering.

I also wanted to add my voice to that of Cabbe et al, and suggest an audible beep to indicate the start of the film. Describing the fade of the studio logo was fine in this case, but it’s not really specific enough.

    Thanks again.

    Hello John!

Great commentary! :D Here’s some feedback:

    1. Do what Darren did. Look thought the trivia on IMDb and Wikipedia and watch some behind the scenes before making the commentary if possible.

    2. There was a lot of pointing out the flaws. “Why didn’t he just shoot that guy instead?”. A little bit of that is ok. But this was a bit too much.

Other than that, Great Show! :D

    /Joel

Oh, and by the way: Au revoir means ’til we meet again’ and yes, that was Eddie Tagoe a.k.a. Chocolate Mousse. ;)

    Hi.
Nice commentary. Was really entertaining. Looking foward to next one.

About that cover fees thingy, perhaps you could do like a lot of sites that run on the internet and add a permanent Donate to support us button on the sidebar. In the long run it’s gonna payoff more than to charge for those commentaries or to ask donations only when you release them without hurting your viewer base.

    Just a tought.

TO ALL! Just sync the counter on your MP3-player to the counter on your DVD-player! It’s as easy as that.

    HIL-AR-IOUS.

For the next one, the big summer classics would proabbly be best.

    A New Hope
    Jurassic Park
    Independence Day

I’d donate $50 for a Brokeback Mountain commentary.
