2001: A Space Odyssey is still one of the most talked about and misunderstood films of all time. Stanley Kubrick’s classic story of man vs. machine is actually quite a lot more than that. Having said that, I’ve never really understood WHY the movie is considered a classic… even with it’s subtle analogies and metaphors, I didn’t think it was all that great. But that’s just me.
Anyway, I found this really interesting little flash site (via Filmrot) that basically takes you through a 15 minute (or so) dissection of the meaning behind 2001: A Space Odyssey. Like any piece of interpretation without it’s source to confirm or deny, it’s subjective in nature… but the creators make some great points and raise solid theories behind the meaning of the film.
It’s a little slow and a touch boring to be honest… but interesting nonetheless. To see the site you can just click here.
I am a sci fi fan, and I like this movie most because of the accuracy it potrays the science:
- notice there is no sound in space, so Kubrick replaced it with music instead.
- the film doesn’t feel hokey, even if you watch it now, as the technology is still relevant.
Aside from that, the short film explaining 2001 was really good I think. I enjoyed it :) Thanks for pointing this out!

Its considered a classic for the use of the visual imagery to tell the story. It is almost like a silent movie in most respects.
