Ashton Kutcher’s Undeserved Popularity Continues in Guess Who

Ashton_Kutcher_8.jpgThe new Ashton Kutcher film, Guess Who, came in at #1 at the box office this weekend. But don’t get too excited about that. Saying your movie was #1 this past weekend is like saying you’re the #1 Jewish gansta rapper currently living in Iran. This was a really weak weekend for films.

However, the fact that Guess Who took in over $20 million begs me to once again ask a question I’ve been asking for years. “Why on earth is Ashton Kutcher such a big celebrity?!?!?!” He has ZERO hit movies (all of them have been dreadful), he’s not even the best performer on his own TV show and he is a mediocre actor at best.

Ashton Kutcher is the male version of Jennifer Lopez. An actor with limited talent, no significant hit films, no critical acclaim at all…. and yet seems to be the center of everyones attention. It boggles my mind.

“It’s the audience that gets punk’d in this crass and sloppy comic recycling of Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner…”
Lou Lumenick - New York Post

“Kutcher is no Jackie Mason. Nor is he leading-man material.”
Allison Benedikt - Chicago Tribune

“…just a succession of tired race jokes made worse by the bad comedic timing of the bland, under-talented Ashton Kutcher.”
Claudia Puig - USA Today

Kutcher seems like a really nice guy, his new film coming out with Amanda Peet called A Lot Like Love looks promising and I tip my cap to any man sleeping with Demi Moore… but this guy is the classic example of Famous for being Famous.

I went to Guess Who with my girlfriend on the weekend and we both enjoyed it. Kutcher didn’t do anything to bug me and I’d actually say he did a pretty good job. I also think Butterfly Effect was a whole lot better than people gave it credit for. I doubt he’ll ever win any major awards but I really don’t think he’s all that bad.

I agree w/Ben on that, although he’s not a great actor, I still enjoy his movies. I did like Butterfly Effect, but haven’t seen Guess Who.

    “Famous for being Famous”

    that’s a dead on statement

I actually want to comment on your J Lo comment. Im not a fan of her music by any means , but she has had some good movies. The Cell , Out Of Sight , and Selena were all pretty good. I think she deserves a little more credit as an actress.

You could be right about Ashton Kutcher, I don’t know. But it does not seem to be fair for Jennifer Lopez who was in a couple of good movies (The Cell, U-Turn), and was actually quite good in Out of Sight. Roger Ebert even compared Clooney and Lopez to Bogart and Bacall (!), and added another half a paragraph of praises to Lopez. Not that I agree with the comparison, but that has to count as some critical acclaim.

Hrm, regarding films, you want to see a good one, go see Czech comedy “Up and Down”… It’s a really good movie. ;)

He plays a lovable dumb guy on TV. That’ll get you a few years and a few movies, somehow. But, he’s quitting That 70s Show this year from what I understand. Without a weekly ad for his movies and ego, I don’t think he’ll be around too much longer.

Personally, I’d love to put him and Paris Hilton on a leaky boat out to sea and be rid of two of the most annoying flash-in-the-pan celebs out there.
