24th Hong Kong Film Award Winners

2046Poster.jpgKungFuHustle.jpgThe 24th Hong Kong Film Awards were held yesterday, and two films really swept the board. 2046 and Kung Fu Hustle, as they wire jumped away with twelve awards between them.

Tony Leung and Zhang Ziyi won the lead acting awards for 2046.

Critics have praised the duo for their nuanced performances. Leung and Zhang also won top acting honors at the Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards announced earlier.

Jackie Chan also received an award for professional spirit. The Guardian continues with:

Chan said he appreciated the prize because it honored his professionalism and conduct, not just his artistic achievements.

“Outside of movies, this involves charity work … an actor’s professional conduct, being punctual, respecting elders. These are very important things,” he told reporters. “This is harder to win than a Hong Kong Film Award.”

Bruce Lee was also named as Chinese Film’s Bright Star of the Century.

Yuen Wah was best supporting actor in Kung Fu Hustle, and Bai Ling was best supporting actress for Dumplings part of the Three…Extremes movie.

kung fu hustle winning best picture is just another testament of the shape hk cinema’s in right now, a poor one.

I know quite a few people who disliked Kung Fu Hustle. I’ll admit that it’s not as good as Chow’s previous work Shoulin Soccer (sp?), which was comedy gold (not the dubbed version, in which they seemed to cut out gags, for no apparent reason).

But KFH is a very funny spoof action film, I think what threw a lot of people is that there’s few direct references to films, and the action is actually pretty graphic. The subtle ridiculousness of the film is where to comedy lies, where to bad guys are just a little bit too off the wall to be taken seriously. Granted, it’s not to everyone’s tastes, but it’s certainly not a ‘poor’ film by any stretch.

not saying it’s the worst film, but it certainly didn’t live up to the hype making millions across asia.

movies like these we typically see in hollywood. the reason why i think it won best picture is because hk cinema has never seen a movie with this big a budget and jam-packed with this much CGI fights.

these are the only precedents i can think of kung fu hustle setting. otherwise, it lacked originality borrowing from such films like “matrix” (re the burly brawl) and my friend pointing out “shine” (re the tunnel sequel.) the fights were loosely held together by a paper thin plot.

i have the undubbed version of shaolin soccer and the jokes in that movie was far more superior in terms of taste and delivery.

chow is far better doing gags like his cameo appearance in jackie chan’s “gorgeous.”
